Discussion
ok im having issues with 5740 aspire intel card ummi3 and i was havving issues with windows7 so i dunno i thinking drier issue ant sggestion cause im beat testing beta 1 ubuntu 11.10 i might try iubuntu but who knows
Acer Aspire 5740
Core i5 430m 2.26ghz HT TB (Turbo Boost does not work <Searching for a workaround>)
Intel GMA HD (i5)
4GB Ram
Tri-Boot Windows 7 Ultimate, Mac OS X 10.6, and Ubuntu 10.10.
Webcam works perfectly. (Tested using gmail.)
Brightness does not work. (I found a workaround however, see below)
Bluetooth USB dongle works. (My model does not come with built in bluetooth)
Everything else listed as works also works perfectly with no adjustments.
To use brightness control:
There is a simple workaround I found. Open your grub.cfg file, find the line:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic-pae root=UUID=3c03e0b3-35df-4ea0-a56a-eac4ab9028c9 ro quiet splashChange it to
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic-pae root=UUID=3c03e0b3-35df-4ea0-a56a-eac4ab9028c9 ro acpi_osi= quiet splashAdding the acpi_osi= will disable the OS reporting to your bios (default is windows_nt) Trying to set this to linux will result in no change, setting it to a blank entry will allow you to change brightness with no problems :)
Enjoy,
-Joe
In my Aspire 5740 i install Ubuntu 10.04. The problem is that is not possible to regulate the bright of the monitor, is always on full bright.
Tried booting with a live Ubuntu Mint 8 CD. Blank screen during bootup, however I did hear the login sound after about a minute (unfortunately, a working distro isn't very useful without a graphics display).
I'm hoping another distro works better.
Oops, I meant Linux Mint 8.
Can't get netinstall to work on Aspire 5740-5255. It says it can't detect my ethernet card and for testing/unstable, it tries to do it through the wireless and fails. I guess I will have to download the full images. Anybody have better luck?
