This laptop uses the Optimus feature which combines the NVIDIA discrete graphics with the Intel graphics on the processor. You can get this setup working with the Bumblebee project.
HDMI doesn't work with Bumblebee installed, you can run hdmi under “vblank_mode=8 optirun some-aplication” (thanks to Cabezon for the tip).
The Asus N46VJ works fairly well with Linux.

Hi, I have the sama laptop, N46VJ, in the latin america version R401J.
I'm using Ubunutu 12.04, I can't get to work my external speaker, my HDMI doesn't work either and when I check the “Additional drivers” software, it shows: ” No proprietary drivers are in use on this system”.
Do you have any suggestion?
SO: Kubuntu 12.10
Graphics chip: GForce GT 635M, running under Optirun
HDMI out: don't work with bumblebee installed, you can run hdmi under “vblank_mode=8 optirun some-aplication”
Sound: THE BEST!!!!, with mini subwoofer connected.
Bulti-in Microphone: working
Headphone Jack: work, sound volume work separately
Microphone Jack: working
Ethernet: working
