Thanks Clive, works with ubuntu 8.10 also, added the line to the file (which was empty), rebooted and now have sound.
Has anyone tried the upgrade to Jaunty? I tested the live cd, sound didnt work, same fix as before? Dont want to risk an upgrade without some info on how to fix some the problems.
Have a look at hdverb and download the newest alsa-driver. But everytime you upgrade the latest version of kernel, you have tou recompile the alsa-sources.
Sorry for my bad english.
Nico
I've found a good fix for the “no sound” problem on Ubuntu Jaunty.
My thanks to the original poster. It got the sound working on my 8930.
add “options snd-hda-intel model=auto” without quotes at the end of this file “/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf”.
You can use gedit, kate or your favorite text editor like this :
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Thanks !!
Ubuntu 8.10 on Aspire 8920G
Installed uBuntu Linux as the OEM installation of Vista was 32 bit. Ubuntu installed extremely easily as dual boot (HDD was partitioned by Acer). It boots up fast - and runs same apps faster than Vista - as is to be expected. I was surprised how easily it installed a CDMA modem - which have given me grief on other computers to configure. Prints and scans fine. Screen has excellent res. Colours are great too. Wireless and Bluetooth work.
Initially these don't work: sound, touchpad, fingerprint reader, and I still don't know about the webcam and BluRay. In the next few days as I get time I'll try to look into those issues.
Even with these minor problems I'm over the moon with the installation. The system is very fast - which makes me happy.
