Summary

You can enter a summary of how well the Asus F6A works with Linux here.

Started with Fedora 10. Had no sound. Pulled in a 2.6.28 kernel from rawhide and sound worked. Hibernate/suspend worked. Backlight control was backwards. Could not get keyboard shortcuts to work.

Just installed gentoo. Had to re-compile kernel with CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO turned off to fix the backwards backlight control. I initially had problems with suspend, hibernate and backlight control not working. For some reason I had to re-emerge hal, dbus, libnotify and gnome-power-manager to get them to work. The keyboard hotkeys don't work as of yet. The webcam and media card slot work. From what I can tell, the webcam uses uvcvideo, wireless uses iwlagn, and ethernet uses e1000.

I finally have the hotkeys working. It seems that prior to kernel 2.6.29, the hotkeys were reported through acpid and you needed to supply a script to handle the events. With kernel 2.6.29, the keyboard seems to be detected properly using hal, so everything just works now.

Also in the kernel config I am using ASUS_LAPTOP and not ACPI_ASUS. I also don't have BACKLIGHT_LCD_SUPPORT enabled in the kernel, but the brightness controls work properly. As of right now everything seems to be working the way it should.

Tested with ubuntu 8.10, pre-build kernel 2.6.27, all functions except camera (need external drivers) and sound (need to modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf adding line: “option snd-hda-intel model=eeepc-ep20”)
Now installed ubuntu 9.04 beta, pre-build kernel 2.6.28, same sound problem (solved as in ubuntu 8.10) and have to fix the backwards backlight, probably turning off CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO (have to try yet)
