Notes

As default the native screen resolution of this notebook is 1280x800, however due to the way the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 functions this resolution would not be usable right away. To get it working you will need to install the 915resolution program and type in:
915resolution 3c 1280 800
This will then allow you to use the native 1280x800 resolution. However this setting will be forgotten after each boot so you will need a way to automatically run this command at every boot. Fortunately most Linux distributions come with the 915resolution program and include a simple way of achieving this. You can view our Configuring the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 & 950 guide for more information.

Currently the audio system in this laptop is not fully supported under Linux. With the latest development ALSA drivers the sounds does appear to function but the volume control does not work nor is there any sounds out of the headphone jack.

The tablet does not seem to behave as intended. It seems to function more like a mouse than a proper tablet.

Summary

Unfortunately with the issues listed above the Asus R1F is not a good laptop to use under Linux. If/when the drivers improve for both the audio and the tablet then this will be an excellent laptop. As of now this laptop is not recomended as a tablet pc, more like a regular laptop.

See how to set it up at:

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1593330&group_id=69596&atid=525127

Note that this is not for non-programmers yet, though hopefully will soon
be available in the standard kernel.

Opensuse

by Jose, Tuesday 26 of February, 2008 [14:48:12 UTC]
I intalled Opens Suse 10.3 both 32 and 64bit They both work exactly the same exept that the 64bit had some compatibility issues with programs like flashplayer and cellwriter, and Opera browser. I couldn't get the cellwriter to work. Both Wifi and bluetooth worked but hey had to be configure Manually AFTER you install everything, it was very easy to hop on other peoples wifi as it would show you there stored passkeys(thats if you knew the passkey). Then intel 945 gm gpu worked fine and I had a native 1080x800 rez OOTB. Due to my skeptizm I had really messed with the touchsreen options under Sax2 tools so that I could use the stylus..no success and I had to reboot the whole pc with a fresh clean install of My vista recovery disk and desided to work on it under vmware fusion.

on Mandriva 2008 Asus R1F works quite well. You have manualy install wifi, mouse, but there are rpm"s so its quite easy. For WiFi in Mandriva Control Center/ Software management/Select media sources choose at least one from Distribution sources and unselect your mandriva cd/dvd as a source. than in Software managemnt for video card type "3945" in search box and select latest drivers. for bloutooth check if bluez packages are installes than type "sudo hidd --connect [bluetooth adr]" (adress is on the bottom of the mouse XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX).

I found something interesting

by Chepe, Wednesday 06 of February, 2008 [15:17:02 UTC]
Hello everyone I found out some Suse dev peeps have succesfully intalled linux with a working pen. The reason I know this is that I've been diligently searching for this. In this blog http://blog.nouse.net/?p=100#comment-36903
Temo quotes that "RandR/xrandr(1)/resapplet work as expected, letting you rotate the screen in any direction. However, the cursor is moving a little funny when using the touchscreen. I’m pretty sure that Danny will take care of that." So then I kept Diggin into his little blog and Found out that "Danny" the so called buddy he referres is working on Some Tablet pc support. You can click on his Link also in the blog.

Gusty 7.10

by , Tuesday 15 of January, 2008 [00:04:59 UTC]
Media card works with 7.10 Ubuntu
So does USB and Bluetooth can see my phone (nokia 668 but could not connect)
No immediate support for tablet/digipen
Sound is on full in some applications and cannot be reduced

Compiz runs great, all extensions (tile etc.)
Very fast to load and shutdown...
Connected to Vista (vista needs a fresh rebooth to be connected to....from hibernate 7.10 sees nothing)
Printing working with Brother mfc 8860DN under cups driver over network (small delay so wait!)

no doubht way better than vista for everything....when tweaked - just wish it had a "fall back to xx/xx/2008" option instead of having to rebuild the box when some package screws things up....
Some apps do run hot on the laptop (especially under VM on Virtual box)

Tablet (Wacom USB chip) Support

by Kevin Shepherd, Sunday 13 of January, 2008 [02:29:27 UTC]
Unfortunately the same lack of touchscreen support is true for the Asus R1E.
Progress on Linux support for this Wacom chip can be followed here:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1593330&group_id=69596&atid=525127

Let us hope that it is supported soon.
