Notes

The GeForce 8400M in the Asus U3S currently is not supported by the open source 'nv' driver. For functioning graphics you will need to install the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

You will need to use a distribution which includes kernel 2.6.22 or greater. Older kernels will not fully support this laptop.

Summary

The graphics controller is the main issue in getting Linux running on the Asus U3S properly. However after these drivers are installed the laptop works just fine.

Installed Mandriva 2008.1, kernel 2.6.24.5-laptop-2mnb. bluetooth works out of the box. For getting the webcam to work it is necessary either to install latest uvcvideo kernel modules (and replace those installed by mdv) or add

options uvcvideo quirks=16

to your modprobe.conf. First option is better. Check http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/

Card reader is detected, but I was not able to read a XD card.

suspend to memory or disk works like a charm.
