Introduction

This is a guide to running Linux with the Asus V1JP laptop. This is a fairly powerful laptop with a good processor and graphics card. Linux support is good as long as you use a recent Linux distribution.

Notes

For the graphics chip you can use either the open source radeon driver or ATI's proprietary fglrx driver. For 3D support, you will need the proprietary driver. Some older versions of X may not have support for the ATI Mobility Radeon x1700, in this case you will need to use the proprietary driver.

You need to use acpi4asus v0.4 or greater for this laptop to function properly, which is included in kernel 2.6.20. This will be included with Fedora Core 6 and Ubuntu 7.04. Otherwise you will have problems with the wireless controller.

Summary

There were no problems in getting the Asus V1JP working when used with an up to date Linux distribution. It is recommended to use a Linux distribution with kernel version 2.6.20 or greater, such as Fedora Core 7 or Ubuntu 7.04.
