Notes

Kernel 2.6.22 or greater is required for full support of the 8510P in Linux. Ubuntu 7.10, Fedora 8 and other distributions released around this time work fine.

For 3D support from the Radeon X2600 you will need to use the proprietary ATI drivers. Most Linux distributions do not include this driver so you will need to install it manually.

Some models of the 8510P include the (better) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600. This hasn't been tested but will likely need the above driver.

Summary

The HP 8510P works just fine with an up to date Linux distributions.

sles,sled, open suse, ubuntu

by gamma, Thursday 01 of May, 2008 [08:10:31 UTC]
First installed open suse 10.3

- video driver and wireless not working
- high cpu through wrong video driver
- after installing the ati driver cpu got better but still to high
- fan noise through cpu utilization

Because of above I installed sles 10sp1 and sled after that:

- both wrong video
- both no wireless

Did not try to solve above but toke the newest UBUNTU (Hardy Heron)

- video oke when you agree the installation of ATI drivers
- cpu still high I think, the only thing i do now is working on this page - cpu=15-20%
- no wireless out of the box. I have to find out now how to install them :-)

The information on the HP site says compatible with suse enterprise desktop --> NO WAY !
If the cpu stays this high i need to go back to XP, and that's something I don't want to do :-(

The open-source radeonhd driver works fine with the Mobility Radeon HD 2600, but with no hardware acceleration as yet. I am using version 1.1.0. No special magic required in xorg.conf. Screen resolution is 1680x1050.

Sound works using ALSA with the snd_hda_intel module.

Onboard wireless requires proprietary drivers so i haven't bothered. Module for the Broadcom BCM4312 is bcm43xx, you need the bcm43xx-fwcutter utility to extract a useable driver from the binary provided by Broadcom.

Onboard ethernet uses e1000 driver, works fine.

Ubuntu 7.10: the graphics driver only works in safe mode.

Have you installed ATI's fglrx driver, that should work. Try using Envy.

Fedora 8 installation

by Cong, Monday 25 of February, 2008 [18:11:22 UTC]
Only Fedora 8 will work for this model Compaq 8510p. Fedora 7 won't recognize intel 965p chipset. On Fedora 8 installation, it was hung at /sbin/loader. One need to applied this statement below at graphic install window.

Hit tab on the graphic screen window and append this line
floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 clocksource=acpi_pm
