Notes

The open source radeon module does not currently support the ATI Mobility Radeon x1600 in the S1. However support for the x1600 has been added in the latest version of the proprietary ATI module. You will need to install this proprietary module to get the display working correctly.

For the audio to work on the S1 you will need ALSA version 1.0.12rc1 or greater.

It is possible to get the ethernet port working on this laptop but it is not an easy job as it uses the et131x module which is not in the mainstream kernel. Please view this page for the modules and an installation guide. It involves patching and compiling so it can be a difficult for inexperienced users.

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) LiveVersion wothout problems, after installation, no way. screen error.
Now I have tried the opensuse 11beta3 and all looks fine, no sound, and 1 of 20 times i can connect to my acsesspoint, 19times not. And all Linux run veryvery slow on this mobile book. I think the older the computer, the faster is linux. Sorry for my english. So far im searching for a better linux.

I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 and Kubuntu 7.10 on this laptop withouth many problems but it is necessary to do it with the alternate version as the live cd doesn't recognize the screen.

When you start the operating system the propietary drivers get installed so the ethernet, the graphic card, wifi, etc works perfectly.

I have also tested bluetooth and works correctly.

I am not sure if it is a problem with the graphic card or other components but all linux distributions tested doesn't work very fast on this laptop.
