Current Linux distributions do not current support the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430 found in the HP-Compaq 6830S as standard. For support you will need to install the proprietary ATI module. Instructions for install the ATI module is available in the guides section here.
The Intel 5100 wireless controller is supported by kernel version 2.6.27. Fedora 10, Ubuntu 8.10 and other Linux distributions which use this kernel version will work fine.
For full sound support you will need to install ALSA version 1.0.18rc3 or higher. At the moment no Linux distribution includes this so manual installation is necessary. A guide to doing this is available in the guides section of this site.
You may also need to add the following line to the bottom of your /etc/modprobe.conf (or your distributions equivalent) file:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
The HP-Compaq 6830S works just fine with Linux as long as you are using kernel 2.6.27 or higher and preform a little bit of tweaking for the sound.
