Wireless was never a problem on my machine. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Aspire 5517. After installation, no wireless driver is seen. Need not to worry. Plug in wired network connection, search for “Additional drivers”, and it will detect STA wireless driver. If at first attempt the hardware is not detected, then restart your machine keeping the network wire plugged in. It should detect the driver after restart. Install it and you should be good with the wireless.
Microphone is a real problem though. Till date I have not been able to get it fixed. I have reported this bug long time bug, but it is not fixed by the developers yet.

Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on Acer 5517-1127 issues: 1)wireless needs to configures, took hours of searching on the net to find a page in Spanish that I translated to have the answer (the other solution require a hard wired internet connection, which defeats the purpose of having ubuntu installed from a usb) 2) Ive spent 4 days trying to figure out how to get the internal mic to work but no luck, tried upgrading alsa, clean install, and a slew of others….gonna try to install madriva now wish me luck

There is no internal mike! Crazy as it seems, especially since there is a webcam. This is the case on my 5517-1502 and confused me for a while when I first got it and ran it under windows. It's even rather misleading because the settings under Windows lists an (external) microphone by default.
I just put Suse11.3 on as a dual boot and have begun to investigate how to get my wifi working. Looks like this ain't gonna be easy :(

I just got my wireless working!! This is the steps I took but I don't know if the first was necessary:
1. Added packman repository and installed the appropriate broadcom firmware as per the following site. BUT!! I ADDED THE 11.3 REPOSITORY (these instructions were for 11.2)
2. I executed the command 'dmesg |grep -i firmware' as root and found a helpful instruction in the log file telling me to execute the command 'sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware' which downloaded the appropriate firmware. NOTE: I HAD A CABLE CONNECTION SO I COULD ACCESS THE INTERNET, BUT THERE WAS A REFERENCE IN THE LOG FILE FOR OFF-LINE INSTALLATION.
(after rebooting, my wireless card was working fine)
I hope this helps otheres!
