Wireless support does work but most current Linux distribution don't support it fully at the moment. You need to install the latest version of the compat-wireless drivers for fully functioning wireless.
In Ubuntu 9.10 you should try installing the linux-backports-modules-karmic package before installing the above as this includes updated wireless drivers as well.
In Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.1 the wireless worked out of the box.
With older distros the wireless component of the Acer Aspire 5534 is the main obstacle with this laptop. A bit of work should get it working properly and newer Linux distributions seem to have solved this issue.
I've been running Linux Mint 11 for quite some time on this laptop. I've tried out other distros in the past and I can come to the conclusion that in order to watch flash or videos its best to NOT install the graphics drivers. kinda ruins any chance of gaming on it but at least it works without video tearing. I've tried every solution to fix the tearing issue but it seems to me that ATI/AMD linux drivers just flat out suck. This has shown me that the next laptop I get MUST have either Intel or Nvidia graphics. My desktop has a Nvidia card and all I have to do is enable VSYNC and everything is good but with this laptop I'm not sure if its just the HD 3200 series or if it's all ATI linux drivers but whatever the case is theres some sort of bug that causes tearing just from installing the drivers. Oh well other than that running Linux on this laptop is the right choice. It isn't a gaming beast it isnt some high end editing machine. It's a just a simple budget laptop great for the basics.

It might have something to do with mint. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Flash is a little sluggish, just like it is on windows, but I haven't noticed any video tearing. It does the Unity 3d stuff fine. It even does WebGL with the Chrome browser. So you can play Chrome store games and stuff on the thing.
I'd just like the internal mike to work.

So…. did you ever find a fix for the internal mic?
