1. To get X to recognize the 1280×800 native resolution, use the i915resolution tool.
2. The camera works in Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) after installing an app called “cheese” through synaptic package manager.
This laptop works very well with a up to date Linux distribution. There were no problems getting it working. It was the most painless Linux install I've ever done.

Hi,
under F13 (or 11&12), my system is freezing until mouse move or keyboard event. bios, interruption, drivers (removed from kernel) change of display driver.. no way. freezing.
The same hardware with WinXP is running properly. Does anyone have an idea to resolve that?

I am also experiencing this problem, I've noticed it on Linux Mint 10 KDE, Gnome, XFCE, and LMDE, Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, Lubuntu 11.04, and OpenSuSE 11.4 KDE and Gnome, and those are all the Linux Distro's I've tried.

ok. I'm not alone!
I don't think it is related to X and desktop. I was thinking about a kernel issue, like kernel scheduler. Why an mouse or keyboard event unfreeze the machine, for several seconds, and back to freeze again.
When freezed, sshd is not accessible at all, until mouse event…
Very strange.
Does anyone have an idea, where to search? I searched on that subject in internet. But nothing was useful for me to resolve that.

I have the same problem with my 11.10 in my 5610 and have given up finding a solution. I tried Open Suse and the problem persisted. I have dual boot with W7 where there isn't any of that. This is the only place I found someone with the same problem.
Webcam was working fine with 11.04. Upgraded to 11.10 and it doesn't work anymore.
I'm using Fedora 12 “Constantine” right now but can't get the multimedia keys to work. I loaded the acer_wmi module but nothing happens. Everything works like a charms except this.
It IS possible to have multimedia key functionality, provided that you load the acer_wmi module into your kernel. Also, iwlwifi should be used in the place of the [deprecated?] ipw nodule.
Also, i915resolution is now obsolete with the new “intel” driver(rather than “i810”).
I haven't been able to make the wifi work… I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, I downloaded the driver you wrote… but even though the OS recognizes the wlan card… I'm not able to connect to any password enabled network with WPA… If any of you guys can help me please email me jorge_moran_jams@hotmail.com
I used the 5610z with Ubuntu and Suse. the most recent distros. Pain in the arse. Cannot get the godforsaken WiFi to work. There isn't enough internet to solve this problem.
I'm using a SuSe 10 and make the wifi work with the madwifi drivers
Webcam works now, Ubuntu 8.04 out of the box… though you sometimes have to switch rgb bgr as noted all over the internet
I have a 5610 as well I am having problem with the webcam. It is the picture is grainy.
PCMCIA works!
I have the Acer Aspire 5610Z, and I use PCMCIA under Ubuntu. No problem at all.
The webcam is another story. I have tried, but not found out how to make it work.
