Notes

You will need kernel 2.6.22 or greater to get the Aspire 5720G working properly with Linux. Older kernels lack properly hardware support.

The open source radeon module included with Xorg does not currently support the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2300. However support has been added for this chip in the current version of the proprietary ATI module. You will need to install the proprietary modules to get the display working correctly.

You can get the webcam in the 5720G working with the linux-uvc drivers, however quality is not the best. Most distribution do not include this driver so you will need to install it manually.

Summary

The display is the main issue with the Acer Aspire 5720G. After some configuration work you can get this laptop working just fine.

Gentoo (x86_64)

Good docs - http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Acer_Aspire_5720
all work fine
video - nvidia 8400 GS (I want only nvidia, it have good drivers on linux)
kernel - 2.6.24-gentoo-r5
acer_acpi and acerhk not build for 64, but Fn+F5(off screen) and Fn ← → (Adjust brightness) work

NO Mobility HD2300 SUPPORT FOR x86

There is no HD2300 Mobility Drivers on the ATI webite that are supported for the x86 architecture.

If anyone knows where I can find the drivers, your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

FC8 on Acer 5720G

I installed Fedora Core 8 on this laptop, the only problems i had was with the sound card but with a little editing in a .conf file i managed to get it work.

The only problem i had is at start up when the network-manager starts to connect to the default wireless network sometimes i get a kernel panic and the system freezes… :-(
