Does it work for you if you plug in an external screen and restart? Then you can turn of screen mirroring and try various resolutions. That seemed to work for me.

I install ubuntu 10.10 and OpenSuse 11.3 and i had a problem with the britness but i pluged a VGA monitor and set the laptop display to 1360×786 resolution and solved the issue. The generig resolution was 1366×786 and didn't work, but now works properly.

My only issue has been a slightly funky touchpad but not worth fighting and the display brightness not working.

Wifi chip is a Broadcom 4357 so you'll need to install Broadcom's proprietary driver, and the screen brightness control doesn't work. Although the later may be due to my not installing a package. Tested with Ubuntu 10.04 64bit via Minimal CD.

Hmm…. I don't have any problems with “headphone” sound – I say “headphone” because I actually jack in a pair of small desktop speakers. The sound is as good as my previous machines… are things different in Windoze?

The acer aspire 5741G works almost perfectly with ubuntu 10.04 64bit. Only problem is very distorted headphone sound which is probably more to do with ubuntu's setup of pulseaudio than a basic linux/laptop incompatibility.
