Make the microphone work with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala 64bit
With Karmic 9.10 64 the mic was not working so I had to install ALSA 1.021 instead of 1.0.20 provided with Karmic.
As instructed on http://www.webupd8.org/2009/11/ubuntu-karmic-upgrade-alsa-to-1021-from.html, I added a ppa:
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable
then run: sudo apt-get update
then launch synaptic and upgrade the following libraries: alsa-base, alsa-utils lib32asound2, libasound2, libasound2-plugins, linux-sound-base
I also installed alsamixergui & libfltk1.1
Then on the command line, run alsamixer, select only capture peripherals with “tab” key and:
- set mic boost at max, “capture” to about 2/3 , “capture 1” to 0, as Input Source select “int mic”. Then exit with escape and the mic should work :)

Does ethernet works in 9.10 64bit? It does not work in 32bit.
Also I have problems with usb ports. I cannot mount the usb disks also.
Hi, no problem for me with ethernet in Ubuntu 9.10 64bit.
For USB, the first time I installed I then upraded the packages and had problems. Since, I reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 but without upgrading the “udev” and “libgudev” packages. It works correctly for now. Don't know if the problems are solved by any recent upgrade though… I'll have to test some day. But at least, if you make sure never to select those 2 packages while updating, it should work correctly for you too.

I'm using Mandriva 2009.1 (rocking by the way) with Gnome. I just added this line at /etc/modprobe.conf
options snd_hda_intel model=acer
still using Pulse Audio and is working pretty cool… This Tuba thing rocks!

For what I know, the fingerprint system is located between the 2 buttons of the touchpad, but I don't know any hotkey related to it…

I have the same problem I can't get the antenna to turn on after I installed kubuntu 8.04 on my Aspire 6930. I very new to Kubuntu. I don't know how to even start.
From what I remember, there is nothing particular to install. At least on Ubuntu 8.10. Ryan, try with Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) to be sure.
Then, there are 2 things to act onto:
- the digital wifi button (4th button from the right on the upper keyboard). Its color is orange when activated.
- the “enable wireless” checkbox which appears when you right click on the “network connection” applet in the taskbar.
If I remember correctly, the 1st time it didn t work until I had activated both AND rebooted.
For those whose wifi connection don't work, what is the color of the digital wifi button ? Is it orange ?
Did you try to *left* click on the network applet in the taskbar to see the list of wifi connections ?
8.10 sometimes requires you to disable and re-able wireless a few times using the NM-applet menu.
I installed ubuntu instead of kubuntu because it seems like there is more support or info for ubuntu. When I push the hot key to activate the wireless antenna it brings up a help file in ubuntu. Is there a way to reconfigure the hotkey to do what it is supposed to do. I think this is the problem. If I'm able to turn it on the the network manager could find my wireless network. I just don't know how to do that.
I'm sorry it's working correct for the hotkey to get a browser for the internet. The hotkey for the wireless network antenna doesn't do anything and the light doesn't change color. Will installing the drivers help? Or is this another issue?
The problem has to do with windows based firmware for the wireless power functions.
I haven't compared the package versions in mint 6 vs ubuntu 8.10, but as intrepid is the base from which felicia is built they should be similar.
In Linux Mint the wireless button is mapped correctly but doesn't work well (read turns it off but rarely turns it on).
What I normally do to turn wireless on is right-click the network manager applet in the taskbar, uncheck enable wireless, and wait a few seconds and recheck it. I sometimes have to repeat it 2 maybe three times but it turns on without needing to restart.
Well this is what I've done so far. I've downloaded device manager and installed it. For some reason it didn't come with ubuntu 8.04 that I have. I downloaded the vista driver for the built in wireless card. I'm following instructions in the book ubuntu 8.04 came in. It says to look in Device manager and find the network card to find make and model of wifi hardware. Looking at it all I see is Intel corporation and connection is PCI. It doesn't state the model. I found the info.udi line that gives me the PCI ID of 8086:4232 but I can't look up the make and model to see if NdisWrapper works works with it. Do I need to find out how to turn on the antenna or will fixing the drivers make it work. Right now ubuntu is not detecting any networks and I have it working with this computer now I'm typing in. Please help this newbie.
I'm going to suggest you use a slightly more recent ubuntu. 8.10 works without difficulty other than some minor bugs like firefox fullscreening on open. Linux mint 6 (Mint Felicia) is ubuntu 8.10 with some minor changes the medibuntu repository preinstalled, but any help from the forums could be applied to it. it has resolved some of the bugs with drivers and things like firefox fullscreening.
Hi, I had problems with ubuntu 8.10 with stability of my wireless connection (most of the time can not connect at all).
My workaround: On the wireless router, a linksys cc543030 I select network mode G-only (versus mixed, B-only). This helps for me.
Further security setting: WPA preshared key, TKIP.
for those having wireless trouble with their Acer laptop on Ubuntu, if the orange light doesn't come on open a terminal and type “sudo ifconfig wlan0 up”. That'll enable the wireless. Doesn't always work but most of the time it does.
Would love to hear more solutions though. It's my only complaint.
the wireless and bluetooth issues are both fixed in ubuntu jaunty. while Jaunty(9.04) is still in beta it is already more stable than intrepid(8.10).
problems in jaunty that haven't been resolved are the sound issues i.e. the ports and internal mic not working. I've already reported the bugs on launchpad. I am planning on including a more thorough analysis this evening, including the work arounds here after I test them all and some of the alternates found in the forums.
After playing with all the hotkey's and rebooting my wireless didnt come up anymore.
After looking at dmesg output i found “radio disabled by HW RF kill switch”. Now i dont know where this hardware kill switch is, or which action induced it.
My solution to get it working again:
open terminal from accessoiry menu.
sudo su
gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options
add the following two lines at the end of the file:
options iwlagn disable=0
options acer-wmi wireless=1
now reboot your laptop. Wireless should work!
For those interested, I managed to make the headphone output work by adding the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

I made the internal mic work under ubuntu 8.10 on my Acer 6930G.
Will take you a little bit of work, I'll start with some preparations:
1) Install by sudo apt-get install the following: g++, xmlto
2) You will need alsaconf (which is not part of ubuntu)
2a) install ncurses (download and install ncurses_5.6+20071124.orig.tar.gz, the INSTALL text contains a lot of text, dont get distracted by it, follow steps, skip extensive testing).
2b) install alsaconf (download and install alsa-utils-1.0.19.tar.bz2)
3) Download realtek's linux driver http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3
3a) Follow manual build instructions (as applicable for Ubuntu)
You're done. You may need to stop & start alsa (/etc/init.d/alsasound restart)
Run alsamixer (to get channels of mute).
I recommend apt-get install kmix. In kmix go to settings, select all channels. So you can set an appropriate recoring level for the mic for if you test with sound recorder.
Skype will automatically adjust recording levels of the mic.
Works like a charm! Skype video chat with internal mic and internal cam works beautiful.
To check the realtek thingy is loaded, enter: lsmod | grep realtek
Should display some lines.

So I tested to install the driver in both Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04 beta 1. Here is how I did it, for those interested.
I only installed the driver by running the following command in folder “alsa-driver-1.0.19-5.11”:
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install
Then I modified the file ”/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf” and added the following lines:
options snd-hda-intel model=ACER

hi, the only thing not working for me still was the tuba bass / cinebass.
To get the Bass working, i followed this link (installed hda-verb):

That post talks about toggling the headphone mute to enable Bass.. for me this has no influence, but i can set the Bass Level by setting the “Side channel” volume.
E.g. by running alsamixer from the terminal.

As steve says everything except the integrated microphone seems to work (to be fair I haven't tested the modem). I haven't found a fix for the mic yet though, so share if you do.
I'm using MINT Felicia which is built from Ubuntu 8.10
web cam does look a little washed out, but it might be the lighting in my room.
both card readers work as do all of the buttons.

i followed Francois instruction, internal mic works but there is loud noise over my voice…about module option:
wrong option: options snd-hda-intel model=ACER
correct option: options snd-hda-intel model=acer
strange: I have ACERwritten in uppercase in my config file and it works ! What difference in usage do you have between the 2 ?
it doesn't exist ACER option in Alsa doc but only acer or acer-aspire option..
i have these questions:
- do you have chip ALC888?
- front speaker works? subwoofer works? internal mic works with or without noise?

regarding acer written in uppercase or lower case, it works for me uppercase… maybe it doesn't matter ?
Regarding ALC888, I think so but was not able to make sure. nevertheless, all Acer 6930G have the same sound system.
The subwoofer maybe doesn't work, I'm not sure as I have speaker plugged on the computer I don't use the internal ones, & I would have to compare the sound to XP or Vista to make sure the subwoofer works or not. But the sound seems “light” so I think it does not work.
Regarding the internal mic, it sure has quite some background noise in it… But it seems usable for me.
I believe the 6930s have the slightly updated ALC889 not the ALC888
ok i am having the same problem as some of you. i am trying to connect to a bluetooth mouse and when i try to turn on the bluetooth i get the bightness control and nothing happens. also i had my web cam working (actually much better in Linux than in windows) and then i did an update and it doesn't work anymore. any advice?
Check your user manual. Although all models have the Bluetooth light-button, not all have a Bluetooth controller included.
I have the Acer Aspire Gemstone 6930 and I used Fedora 10 with no problems but I like trying different distro's like others enjoy games ;) I setup OpenSUSE 11.1 and I am more then impressed with how good it works with it. The installer with its Partition manager is by far the easiest I have used, it setup an Extended Partition and then divided it up perfectly…Excellent laptop and the price is unbeatable for the performance…
@Xak I came across the same thing with the WIFI button to disable WIFI and then having to reboot….sorta the same thing in vista when you hit the button to disable it and if you just try and enable by going to the Managing network's it doesnt enable it half the time until you hit the button again..
I have a 6930G and the WiFi works if you don't shutdown the computer with the WiFi off. Otherwise you need to turn on the WiFi by pressing the touch panel and then reboot the 6930. My WiFi will then come on when it's booted up. The brightness control comes up when I turn off my bluetooth but doesn't affect the bluetooth opperation - it's just a small glitch.
My card reader works fine.
My headphone jack doesn't seem to work though.
To run the Live version of Ubuntu (8.04) I have like this:
After choosing the language, press F4 and select video mode without failure.
Ubuntu starts very well!

Hi,
I installed fedora 8 on it. My display is stretched because of wide-screen. When i try to set the screen resolution manually then it just does not show any options there. Acer provides driver for Vista which sets the display to desired resolution and everything is fine over there.
Can anybody help me in setting the display resolution so that my display does not get stretched ?

i would like to state that in qatar(middle east), it comes with a
256mb nvidia geforce 9300m gs and not a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD as stated in this page.

so i would like to ask all those guys who have put up posts here if they also have the same configuration and how it is for gaming.

Installed OpenSuSE 11.1. Everything that I use worked right out the box with the exception of the screen resolution. I needed to manually set up the type of LCD screen then set the resolution accordingly. I never use the webcam, or microphone, so I have no idea if they work. Wireless worked perfectly, even connecting to a WPA-2 connection.
Beautiful laptop, even more beautiful without windows and running SuSE.

I just bought this laptop and I am on the way to pick it up, of course as soon as it get's in the door linux will be waiting for it and I'll report back afterwords. I was amazed at what you get with this laptop for the price and looking for the last week online I have yet to find a “bad review” about it.
Acer 6930
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit on my Acer 6930. Things went smoothly. Everything works (including the Webcam) except the integrated mic (the one in the lid). I can get a plugged-in mic to work without any trouble. However, there does seem to be some minor problems with the “sound system”. Some of the alsa mixer controls don't seem to work the way they are supposed to.
i just got my 6930 and tried running the live ubuntu persistent disk on it and i couldnt get my wifi to work. every time i tried to start the bluetooth i got the brightness control. maybe im doing something wrong. and i didnt get a user manual so i have no idea how to turn on my wifi anyway.
