I have a question. I screwed up my optical drive on this laptop and I don't need it, but in original Windows is possibility to turn it off to save battery. Is this possibility in Linux to? I want to install Debian.

This page states that the ath9k module should be used for wireless, but Ubuntu 9.10 (for me, anyway) uses iwlcore/agn (makes sense as it's an intel wireless device, yes?) which works, but cuts out a fair bit. Loading the ath9k module doesn't seem to allow use of the wireless.

My experiences with Ubuntu 9.10 on my new Acer 5810t (=intel gma 4500 only): Everything worked out of the box (lan/wlan/disks/screen/sound/etc), except: - brightness screen buttons (alt+cursorright/left) show the popup window but this does not influence the screen at all. - battery 100% charged - +/- 4 hours to go (maybe better after a some charges…)
Noise: fan is running all the time, but can hardly be heard (I am working in a 100% silent room). Laptop stays very cool.

Roboertu, can you set the brightness using the panel applet or from Power Management window?

The brightness control doesn't work at all in Ubuntu 9.04 for Acer 5810T.

I have 5810TG. Debian 5.0 –> 5.03 Lenny. Ethernet and Wi-Fi wont work from the box on kernel 2.6.26-2. On 2.6.30 work well. Atheros http://partner.atheros.com/Download.aspx?id=103 driver solve first problem. Now I need iwl5100 driver to Wi-Fi. For using ATI graphic I shutdown integrated Intel graphic in windows, because ATI not activated by default, and after it Linux accept ATI driver. Works well. Good laptop. But some little things making me evil at first time :)

I purchase the same compute but I wasn't able to install any distribution due to the net install I choose and the problem with ethernet card. Please stan would you tell us which distribution did you use? In opensuse 11.1 the wireless is detected correctly out of the box but neither the eth0 nor the grphics works. Saluti
