It's a UPEK TouchStrip. USB ID is 147e:1000 which gets not recognized by the system out of the box. Some users reported getting it working with fprint and Fingerprint GUI, but not with KDM.
Works very well out of the box. Tested with Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

I have this ACER 5730Z ASPIRE model laptop,
I have a problem in sound when VOIP software using,
no problem to watch movies & songs..etc..
only for VOIP using to call int'l calling…
can anybody suggest me that how I can fix it please….
installed ubuntu 8.04, upgraded → 8.10, later 9.04
today I tried some runs on zsnes, but after about 10 min. it's overheating. shutdown.

Installed 8.10, then upgraded to 9.04 without any problems at all. Used WUBI to dual boot to Vista. Works well for me. Can only access 3GB of the 4GB installed and the BIOS is VERY restrictive. Performance is great, even with lots of Compiz settings enabled. Does get very warm when used on my knee and has a habit or overheating when using flash for video or games, even for short periods. Not got fingerprint reader working, but not tried. Memory usage rarely gets over 1.2GB. Overall - very capable of running Ubuntu extremely well. Would love to get access to all 4GB - just because :)
I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop (32 AND 64 versions) via Wubi onto my Travelmate 5730.
Everything works fine, except that neither version of Ubuntu recognize my 4GB Ram, even if the Bios and Vista (32 bits) detect it. (Vista detects it, but uses only 3Gigs. I hoped Ubuntu would do a better job.)
I've even installed a server kernel on the 64 bit ubuntu with no change.
Any idea?
32 bits systems only can use around 3,2GB of RAM.
This include Ubuntu 32 bits, Vista 32 bits, XP, Windows 7 32 bits, etc.
You can install ubuntu 64 bits, but there are some software without versions for 64 bits systems, like google earth or (some months ago) flash-player.
I think it's better stay with the 32 bit system for now.
Thank you grajea, but as I mentioned in my post I have tried the 64-bit version of Ubuntu with no difference to the amount of memory available. I have been running 64-bit Ubuntu for many months now, and it's very very well supported. With the 95% of servers using 64-bit OS's I actually believe that 64-bit is easily as-well supported as 32-bit now. Why cripple yourself using only half your CPUs capability.
I'm pretty sure the problem I have is with the BIOS settings - I've read a lot about this online and there's a setting that need to be enabled (PAX, or PEX or something like that) in order for the OS to be able to make use of the full 4GB.
The problem is that the TravelMate has an incredibly restrictive BIOS that wont let you even SEE any of the useful things.
Does anybody know how you can edit an Acer BIOS?

Absolutely not, the fan is working normaly, and of course in my place actually it is winter seson. Anywhy everything gone well from the beginig, from the installation to setup the wirelles connection. I'm a newbie on linux so everybody can do that alone.
every think working well without any problem on Ubuntu 8.10
mine has fan always on with fedora. do you have the same problem on ubuntu?
