I have a Macbook Pro 1.2 (first intel 17” wit Core Duo) Ubuntu 11.10 works, but I'm disappointed by the performance in regard to OS X.
The Blutooth does not work, i'ts recognised, I see the devices, but can't connect to them.
Battery life is almost 1/2 compared to OS X.
The Touchpad, so good in OS X that I'll never wanted to use it with a mouse is suddenly sluggish under Ubuntu, looks like the touchpad resolution is divided by 4…
SPDIF optical output is always on.
The webcam does not work.
I did not test Firewire and IR reciever.
Everything else is ok.
Hi All. I test MacBookPro 2.2 whit many Linux Distro. He work well; Linux Mint and Ubuntu have many features implemented for Mac and is easy way for make end configuration work. Remember: Pommed for Keyboard BackLight and special function control, Ati is work well with Gallium but Proprietary Driver is tremendous installation, like many other ATI New Board (Not Mac Problem ) but OpenSuse have workaround ^__^, WebCam can use but he want use original firmware (Apple BLA BLA!). Many time some distro; when choice keyboard and use: USA Keyboard, USA Mac keyboard; automatically install pommed. Only touchpad; do not like work under linux have move like zap.
I love the hardware, but want the LINUX OS … the MAC OS/X would be a nice fallback, but I'm really interested in running openSUSE LINUX 11.4 on it.
Anybody done it yet? (I don't have one to try it or I would have by now)

I'm single booting Linux Mint 10 on it (MacBookPro3,1 17” from late 2007). Wireless drivers may or may not work with actual kernels (lots of disconnections) and sound is not as good as the crystal clear sound from MacOS. I never managed to make Firewire work. Everything else is perfect.
If you do a single boot on linux, don't forget to lower the startup sound level to the one that pleases your ears, as you won't be able to change it anymore.
The touchpad is incredible for web browsing. I have been using PCs notebooks for years, and I have never liked touchpads, but this has proved to be an exception. I can easily do two-button clicking, scrolling with two fingers, and going back and forth through pages with three fingers. I find I no longer do I have to lug around a USB mouse (except if I want to some gaming). See Here:

Run it with APPLE PowerBook G4 12 Series Battery, good since I purchased!
