This is a guide to running Linux with the Asus A6R laptop.
This guide is intended to provide you details on how well this laptop works with Linux and which modules you need to configure. For details on how to actually install and configure the required modules have a look at our guides section for distribution specific instructions.
For the graphics chip you can use either the open source radeon module or ATI's proprietary fglrx module. For installation instructions, you can view our Configuring an ATI graphics chip guide. For 3D support, you will need the proprietary module.
You need to ensure the 'external amplifier' option in the sound mixer is off for the audio to work.
This wireless controller in this laptop does not have any native drivers for Linux so you will need to use the ndiswrapper module. For installation instructions, you can view our Configuring the ndiswrapper module guide. The windows driver to use with ndiswrapper can be found here.
The main issue with this laptop was with the wireless networking. Other than that there were no problems in getting this laptop working when used with an up to date Linux distribution. It is recommended to use a Linux distribution with kernel version 2.6.16 or greater, such as Fedora Core 5 or Ubuntu 6.06.

There is too many users with Asus a6r and Ubuntu, Debian or smth like this. One really big trouble - soundcard. I've got gOs (googlegadgetOS, based on Ubuntu 8.04) and all i've got - “beep” sound from dynamics (integrated or with output).
Sorry for bad english

Kubuntu 8.04, 8.10
I'm using this laptop for some time, so a few comments: wireless works with b43 module for broadcom, WITHOUT ndiswrapper. In ubu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24) the range is miserable, but with 8.10 it's all right. SD card reader works. Webcam doesn't work

Suse 10.3 and Asus A6R
I have installed Suse 10.3 on my Asus A6R. Everything works fine except for the wireless LAN card, and camera. I have not tested the modem, so I do not know if this works. Suse seems to find and install the Wlan card, but when scanning for a network I'll find the network, but can not connect.
