Notes

If you have this “older” Eee PC model, don't despair! It works just fine with the latest Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

Summary

I have installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) on an Eee PC 701 model 4G, which has only 4 GB of SSD disk, and everything worked just fine. The built-in webcam might be disabled by default in the BIOS, so if Cheese says “no camera”, check the BIOS settings (Press F2 during power-up).

I have a 701SD and it works very well with Ubuntu Net book Edition 10.04 running on SD Card. I have SD cards made with LiLi USB creator. Easypeasy 6.1 also runs well, as does Fluppy, PCeee. Fluppy and Easypeasy seem to run the best for 7 inch screen, but Ubuntu 10.04 NBE seems like my personal favorite. However, I have had the SD cards crash a few times. It takes little time to make a new one. This tiny Net Book is a dream when you use cloud storage such as Ubuntu One or Google Docs. In this age for tiny netbooks and smartphone OSs, this little gem is coming into its own. I bought this one refurb off E-bay for about $100 and with 2 GB ram upgrade it runs faster than all of my desk tops. It came with WinXP, but I run it with Linux off the SD card reader. There are some interesting mods for this laptop as well, such as a touch screen kit for about $60. The smallish keyboard is the only issue to deal with but it is no doubt the most bang for your netbook $ on this or any other planet.

Just installed ubuntu onto pc 701 sd seems to be fine but how can I get a higher resolution than 800 X 600

liviux76, Sunday 26 of September, 2010 [16:58:59]

Hello,
Do you have a resolution of 800×600 on your eee pc 700 series?
I knew the the highest possible resolution was 800×480.
Please let me know how you were able to have that resolution!

Card reader works too. I have one running with ubuntu 10.04. Everything worked out of the box.

I have everything working out of the box with fedora 11 except the wireless card. Shouldn't be too hard to change, though

Please look at this distro that is specially designed for Asus EEE netbooks (for all models) with preconfigured drivers etc. http://www.geteasypeasy.com/
