Notes

General

You will need kernel version 2.6.22 or greater for proper hardware support from this laptop.

Graphics

Most recent Linux distributions support the ATI Mobility Radeon X1100 “out of the box” in 2D mode. For 3D support you will need to use the proprietary fglrx module. See the guides here for installation details.

Wireless

The asus-laptop module that comes with Ubuntu 8.10 makes so that, as long as it is active and loaded, you cant enable wireless, regardless of what method you use. You need to unload it after installing drivers for you wireless, in order to make it work.

For a complete guide on how to install drivers and unload the asus-laptop module, see this guide:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1006254

Camera

You will need to install the experimental Syntek module for support. I don't think any Linux distributions includes this so it will need to be installed manually.

Summary

The computer works very well with Ubuntu!

Card reader is working very good. Wireless is working almost out of the box. Ceck this out: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=22994&p=134760&hilit=asus+wireless+f5rl#p134760
Only some game performance is still lacking a bit. Mini games like zuma running with Wine are not working perfectly.

I installed Fedora 10. . . Gets stuck at the login prompt. Caps lock and Scroll lock LEDs flashing. Anybody else tried Fedora?

It works fine with me under Ubuntu 8.04

Problems:

  • ATI 3d not working , I use EnvyNg to install drivers , but with some hang after 3d screen saver.
  • Wireless work by windows drivers using windows wireless drivers , or you can test http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/
  • 7 buttons mouse not working , work as normal 5 buttons mouse

Working perfectly under Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1 (milestone release)
Only hardware support that doesn't work out of the box is 3D graphics and wireless.
I got 3d working by installing envyng from the repos then running it to automatically install the appropiate Ati driver.
For the wireless just grab the lastest version of the madwifi driver from http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/ … version r3861 as I'm writing this post.

Step by step:
wget http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3861-20080903.tar.gz

tar zxvf madwifi*
cd madwifi*
make
sudo make install
sudo reboot

then wireless will be working perfectly
