If you plan on using more than 2 gigs of ram with this laptop it WILL NOT BOOT PROPERLY. This is also an issue with Windows Xp (it works on Vista), Asus currently has no plans of fixing this issue though. [EDIT: There are possible workarounds for this issue that can be found throughout the community…]
Over all other than not being able to use my extra 2 gigs of ram everything runs pretty flawlessly on it, I am using Ubuntu 8.10 64bit.
Discussion
This notebook is compatible with Ubuntu's latest release (Intrepid Ibex). I am a Linux Mint user and there are several hiccups you'll need to workaround, most notably the GPU when having 3GB+ RAM and also the Framebuffer detection (Ubuntu Bug) by post-x boot processes. If you need any assistance with anything; look around for my posts in the Linux Mint Forums. I provided a rewrite of Fourmii's instructions on a specific HowTo for the graphics setup, which will require a recompile of the latest kernel - his post is at nvnews: Just Google' “Unable To Install 9500M GS” to find his post and the latest patches, which are available in Ubuntu's threads.
