I'm running a Debian (testing) machine with KDE on kernel 2.6.32. The system is running stable and fast and except for wlan installation I had no greater issues.
The sound and wlan card couldn't be made to work with the 2.6.26 kernel. Don't waste time trying to get it to work and go for 2.6.28 directly (or higher, of course). Debian hasn't included this kernel version in its repositories yet, so you will have to get it from www.kernel.org and compile it yourself.
To get wlan running, don't forget to include the iwlagn module. It's located in
make menuconfig > Device Drivers > Network Device Drivers > Wireless LAN
Then get and install the firmware for the 5000 series as described here: http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagn Current kernel builds include this module; the firmware can be installed via aptidude (firmware-iwlwifi).
I recommend you also install NetworkManager+knetworkmanager or wicd to manage your wlan networks. I had to join group “netdev” for it to work correctly. This will always try to connect and keep the connection to your favorite network without the usual console pain.
