This is a guide to running Linux with the Asus V1JP laptop. This is a fairly powerful laptop with a good processor and graphics card. Linux support is good as long as you use a recent Linux distribution.
This guide is intended to provide you details on how well this laptop works with Linux and which modules you need to configure. For details on how to actually install and configure the required modules have a look at our guides section for distribution specific instructions.

For the graphics chip you can use either the open source radeon module or ATI's proprietary fglrx module. For 3D support, you will need the proprietary module. Some older versions of X may not have support for the ATI Mobility Radeon x1700, in this case you will need to use the proprietary module.
You need to use acpi4asus v0.4 or greater for this laptop to function properly, which is included in kernel 2.6.20. This will be included with Fedora Core 6 and Ubuntu 7.04. Otherwise you will have problems with the wireless controller.
There were no problems in getting the Asus V1JP working when used with an up to date Linux distribution. It is recommended to use a Linux distribution with kernel version 2.6.20 or greater, such as Fedora Core 7 or Ubuntu 7.04.
Discussion
Bluetooth works fine.
There is no PCMCIA adapter in this notebook, but there is the Express Card module
Firewire adapter works fine.
The camera works fine too.
Fingerprint reader needs additional soft, if used w/o TPM module and don't need, if used with TPM.
I've tested it on Ubuntu 8.04, 6,06, Fedora Core 8, 9.
