Be sure to use kernel 2.6.28 or later to get all devices operational.
Can be used for office or field work with great success, but has issues with rendering 3d.

Wireless works fine since Ubuntu 9.04.
Modem 56k (it is Motorola Si3054) does not work at all. There are some problems between ALSA and sl-modem.
Ubuntu 9.04 working perfectly, only bad thing left is poor performance and graphical artifacts in 3d mode, but you shouldn't need this for work related task in general.
Update: ubuntu 9.04: Wireless works out of the box BUT: Fn-F2 toggle button does not work. I could not find a way to switch wireless on and off.
The problem is that the wireless is OFF when computer returns from sleep, and there is no way to turn it on again. So basically, sleep does not work as you have to restart the pc to get wireless working again.
P.S. Both scripts asus-wireless.sh and asus-wireless-2.sh do nothing.
I have Ubuntu 8.10 working on the sytem. I had to install wireless drivers. I have not tried the modem but the card reader works fine. Using it with a sandisk SD card.
Kubuntu 8.10, works out of the box, except for wireless card, but there is an easy to use patch available at http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#DownloadlatestLinuxwirelessdrivers
Next major kernel update should have this patch integrated.
All basic functions seems to work ok, but 2d\3d performance is very low with current drivers - soon should start working as intended.
ubuntu wireless problem
Ubuntu 8.10:
- Can not get wireless working properly. After considerable trouble I could get the network card to be detected, but it is still not possible to turn the radio on. Fn-f2 does not work and wifi led stays off.
Mandriva:
- Wireless works out of the box.
If possible, could you provide some more details about how well this laptop works with Linux?
