The NVIDIA Geforce 8400M is also available for the Vostro 1510. This has been reported to work with the proprietary nvidia modules.
Some versions of the Vostro 1510 include the Dell Wireless 1395 and 1505 controllers. These are Broadcom based controller which are not well supported under Linux. If you are about to order the Vostro 1510 it is recommended you select the Intel wireless option as tested here.
Broadcom proprietary drivers are now available in the Ubuntu 8.10 repositories. I was able to load the Windows drivers with a wrapper, but was provided this driver after an update.
The sound works but depending on which version of ALSA you are running you may have problems with headphones and the microphone. If this is the case you will need to update your version of ALSA. The guides on this site should help.
As long as you have an Intel based wireless controller, the Dell Vostro 1510 has no problem working with Linux.

I have Ubunto10.10 from few months and i am experiencing problem with my card reader. When i insert my camera's memory card it doesn't even shows that it is connected. If somebody have had the same or close problem and have resolved it please help me!!!

All is depending on OS installed. While 1510 has 64bit processor, AMD64 version of OS is to be installed.
a) be carefull with updates. Kernel is to be only for 64bit system. PLS check the list of automatic updates.Other way the mix of 64bit and 32bit kernels is unstable and problematic. May be losses in functionality (video, sound ( tik,tik…), etc.
b) PLS use UBUNTU site to download OS. If you are using the system with malfunction, PLS use alternate UBUNTU distributive to repair system.

I run Kubuntu since 8.04 on Vostro 1510 (now running 10.10).
I have the Dell Wireless Card with Broadcom chipset. When I first installed Kubuntu, the wireless worked well with “normal” WLAN (WPA2 Personal encryption). But “WPA2 Enterprise” (where every user has its own user/password - no PSK) just didn't work. I used Windows on the WPA2-Enterprise-network for some time and after some update (I think it was 10.04, but I'm not sure) it just worked out nicely. So I think drivers got better for this card by now. At least its working fine for me.
The keyboard-issue didn't affect me in 8.04 then in some versions in between (I think since 8.10 or 9.04), but this issue was fixed then in 9.10 or 10.04 I think.
So running Kubuntu 10.10 everything works pretty well for me, even the Dell wireless card.
As Kubuntu and ubuntu are quite the same regarding hardware drivers I think, this sould also apply to ubuntu and all its derivates.
In Kubuntu, the laptop fan always worked, no problems here.
(Btw: Kubuntu even worked for a while when my graphics card was broken - windows would always crash 2 minutes after bootup whereas kubuntu worked for about an hour until it crashed. After the motherboard was replaced both worked again ;) )
I am a newbie to linux, i have just installed ubuntu 9.04 on my DELL Vostro 1510, and i am having a problem with my sound card; well when i play any sound on it, i keep hearing TICKS in the background (tic, tic, tic, tic, ..)! i am very confused, googled a bit but never found exactly what i am looking for.. my sound card is Realtek ALC268.
I tried to add options snd-hda-intel model=dell but no luck..
I also suffer some sound problems with my Vostro 1510. Try to disable recording. I sometimes suffer from those ticks while playing with recording levels. I have some problems with recording (some sliders in alsamixer are doing different things than they are intended to do (Some of them are changing DC offset)). I use snd-hda-intel.model=laptop-eapd
I am needing to find out what i need to configure the Linux Kernel for a recompile. I'm using the Dell vostro 1510 I've just installed CentOS. not everything works in the laptop. It's going to be a major task but I want to have linux reconize all the hardware.
I have problems with the CPU fan on this laptop. Just don't work out-of-the box. I have to use the i8kfan command to make it start at boot time. Sometimes i get a kernel panic when i8kfan start the fan. The i8kfan was written for the Inspiron not for vostros, may that cause the problem. :( The rest of the hardware works perfectly, im using Archlinux(testing) periodically updated.
My Vostro 1510 loses the keyboard and mousepad sometimes when I boot the system. Other times they just work.
Someone has experienced this same problem?
I'm using Fedora 10, but the same occurs with ubuntu 8.10
I also experience the internal keyboard and mouse being disabled randomly at boot-up. An external USB keyboard and mouse works every time, and nothing can be found in the logs to see why the fault occurs.
Again, I am using Fedora 10.
On the network side, I had to download and compile the native drivers for WIFI. However, this was easy to do and performs well.
and so far all I get with sound is a clicking noise.
The Bluetooth device was not detected but I have not investigated that yet.
Have you been able to resolve the problem with keyboard/mouse?
I also have it with Ubuntu 9.04. Works fine on Windows.
I had the problem with the keyboard lost. The issue was solved for me by adding “i8042.reset” to kernel commandline.
Vostro 1510 w/Ubuntu
I have a Vostro 1510 w/Intel 3945 wireless. I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on this machine w/no particular problem other than getting the wireless to work. I used back ported drivers and Wicd. I installed the just released Ubuntu 8.10 which configured the 3945 during installation. I did have to enter my WPA key, but that's ok. :). FWIW, I did a little more detailed post on the Ubuntu 8.10 installation forum.
