This is a guide to running Linux with the HP EliteBook 2530P laptop.
This guide is intended to provide you details on how well this laptop works with Linux and which modules you need to configure. For details on how to actually install and configure the required modules have a look at our guides section for distribution specific instructions.
This page is just for discussing using Linux on the HP EliteBook 2530p. For a general discussion about this laptop you can visit the HP EliteBook 2530p page on LapWik.
For sound to work you need to add the following line to your /etc/modprobe.conf (or your distributions equivalent) file: options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 single_cmd=1 model=laptop

Any tips how to make the HP buttons work under Ubuntu? I am still on Karmic and the only button that works is “mute”. I would really like at least the following to work: - wifi indicator .. at the moment, the indicator is blue all the time - volume up/down buttons - the info and presentation buttons are not that important, but it would be interesting to know how to map them to something useful..
Thanks.

“Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN” wireless network card is not working on my HP2530p. The Wireless network is disabled, and when I try to turn it on, only the bluetooth turn on and the wireless card remains off. I already putted iwl5000-firmware.ucode into /lib/firmware but nothing change.

HP EliteBook 2530p works with Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” live CD. Display, keyboard, mouse, sound and wireless are automatically configured.

With Ubuntu 9.10 beta I've noticed an issue with the mute button still, but slightly different.
Pressing the mute button will mute the internal speakers, but not the headphone jack. Also, enable mute with the headphones connected and then disconnect the headphones. Mute will get disabled automatically for you for some reason.

@Michal Kaut: you are right speakers are on all the time along with the headphones, but if you press the “mute” button on the top of the laptop, near the volume control, you can mute the speakers ;) and the headphones will still work :) at least here it works :|

AuthenTec 2810 fingerprint reader (08ff:2810 AuthenTec) doesn't work under linux at this time. Older models are functional but this new line seems to have encrypted USB communication and scanned fingerprint images cannot be simply captured. I wrote to AuthenTec and received following answer: 'Currently AuthenTec does not support Linux. We are in the process of developing a Linux offering and we have strong hopes this comes to fruition in the future. Please feel free to check back in with us every so often to see where we are on Linux support.'

I was unable to boot liveCD/install Ubuntu (8.04,8.10,9.04alpha4). It got stuck on CPU Thermal message (when running without battery inside) or on battery status (when running with battery inside). I had to use alternate CD (8.10) with acpi=off to install ubuntu and after installation I had to modify menu.lst for grub with acpi=off parameter. With ACPI off everything is very limited (CPU freq. scaling, power management, quick buttons etc.) SOLUTION TO RUN LINUX ON THIS LAPTOP WITH ACPI ENABLED: set 'Enable the fan while AC is On' to Disabled. Then everything runs out-of-the-box. Thanks to http://anholt.livejournal.com/40006.html

Sorry. I had the same issue with the BIOS setting and the Ubuntu 8.10 live CD and forgot to post it. I found the solution here: http://www.oculon.org/blog/?p=357
# Add the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
# Reboot laptop
There seem to be a lot of posts recommending the “enable_msi=1” option. Apparently, it helps with sound quality issues.

Thanks for that Bob.
Adding those three lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf got the sound on my Elitebook 2530p going under Ubuntu 9.04 too.
Sound is not brilliant, but better than silence!

I can confirm that the above made my laptop speakers to work - but now they work all the time, even when I plug the headphones in
I tried a couple of different models (hp, laptop-hp, …), but 'laptop' seems to be the only one having any effect.
Any idea how to make the speakers behave in the expected way?
Thanks Michal

I can confirm this solved the problem with in 2730p ubuntu 9.04 as well.
Thanks

The snd-hda-intel options worked well for me up until now. Tried the Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) pre-release, which uses the 2.6.31 Linux kernel. Sound stopped working, no devices were even put in /dev. Turns out, the solution was to remove the options again!
So, as of Linux 2.6.31-ubuntu10, the options are not needed and actually make sound not work.

With Ubuntu 8.10, I found that:
* Sound works * Wireless works * Bluetooth works in simple tests * USB works * The card reader reads the SD card from my camera just fine * The camera works in a quick test with 'luvcview' (though I didn't test microphone) * The fingerprint reader doesn't appear to be supported yet (although I didn't invest much time in that)

For enabling sound under Ubuntu 8.10 I used the options posted by stego_s_aurus
in http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-940689.html but changed the model option to “laptop” as follows:
# Add the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
# Reboot laptop
