HP Mini 1001TU works great with Ubuntu 10.04. System performs well and all Function buttons work. In order to enable wifi you may need to install the non-free drivers (depending on your model) through “jockey” the non-free driver wizard in Ubuntu.

I solved the problem just by selling the HP Mini and buy me a Asus EeePC 1005PE, everything works out of the box with minor issues, glad I got rid of that stupid HP Mini!

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat did not work on my Compaq / HP Mini 110c, so I was a bit worried, if Ubuntu 11.4 Natty would work.
But it does: I run it in “Classic” mode (an option you can choose on login), with all visual effects switched off - and have no issues at all with the proprietary Broadcom drivers, that used to pose problems in older editions. Sound, Mic, Wifi, Skype - everything works just fine.
The desktop looks clean, clear, simple, and even as the computer-illiterate person that I am, it is much easier to use than windows, and no problem to switch to it from mac.

I had trouble with CentOS and few problems with Ubuntu on my 110c:
I'd be very happy if my internal cardreader would start to work though…. (works fine via an USB reader) Ubuntuy 10.04/Linux Mint 9

Next to the sound problem on the netbook is the fact that the built in SD card reader does not seem to function in my Mini 110 under Ubuntu/Linux Mint. I have not seen any mentions of this anywhere yet! If this cannot be solved, I am really considering to sell my brand new mini with Atom 450 processor and buy an Asus, as I had not any issue with my 910!

By the way, I'm talking Ubuntu 9.10 Final and Linux Mint 9

Installing from Karmic Koala daily distribution ISO (9.10) everything works, even the SD card reader. I was having issues with Jaunty and the lan port, and never did make that work. The HP 110 1030NR, which I have, works flawless with the Karmic 9.10 beta dated 11/2009. Full support for everything.
I am dual booting with XP and grub installed and handled the booting flawless. As well as the partitioning, which came off without a hitch, cutting the drive in equal sized partitions.
Hope this info helps someone ake the decision to install on the HP, it is a much more usable OS than the XP that came on it. I'll eventually repartition to remove the XP all together as I never boot into it any more.

I had a similar problem with sound on the HP mini 311. I had sound through the headphones but not through the speakers. Alsa 1.0.018 was not properly identifying the sound hardware. The solution was to compile a newer version of Alsa than Jaunty uses (1.0.21). There were very good instructions here: http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/
After upgrading Alsa and rebooting I was greeted with the welcome sound of bongos coming through the speakers.

I also had PuppyLinux running on it.
The sound problem is solved by installing a new Linux kernel. It had a Alsa driver bug…
