Ubuntu / Kubuntu work well. In some countries, this laptop is available with Linux preinstalled.
This page is just for discussing using Linux on the HP Mini 5102. For a general discussion about this laptop you can visit the HP Mini 5102 page on LapWik.
I've surfed around a bit but can't find anything much about getting the ethernet to work with Debian Lenny on the HP Mini 5102 I guess it's still early days.
Boot of openSUSE-11.2-NET-i586.iso hangs on “Starting udev…” message. This can be fixed by disabling “Enable WLAN device” option in BIOS. However, the ethernet controller does not work with current openSUSE and Ubuntu Netbook Remix (as of 27.4.2010). The only system that works out of the box is preinstalled SUSE Enterprise.
Everything works after I turned them on with Windows using HP tools. 3G modem requires firmware files from HP, gobi_loader and some patched kernel modules due to bug in 10.04 default kernel.

Ubuntu 10.10 install was quick and everything but one thing seems to work rock solidly.
The one thing that kind of doesn't work is F1-F12 functionality seems to be swapped with FN+F1…F12 functionality. In other words, to get F1-F12 function key presses requires fn-key combo to work - pressing plain F1 does what fn+F1 is supposed to do, same for all the rest F2…F12.

The function key / fn key functionality can be swapped from BIOS. So thats not a Ubuntu bug.

Ubuntu Network Edition 10.04 works out of the box on the HP Mini 5102. Here are my installation instructions: Installing Ubuntu Network Edition on an HP Mini 5102.
I have created http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HP_Mini_5102
Linux Kernel 2.6.33 seems to contain the Marvell Ethernet LAN drivers for the HP5102.
