The audio works with the latest version of alsa (see the guides on this site on how to upgrade your distro) and by adding the following line to your /etc/modprobe.conf or equivalent file:
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1.

I have installed ubuntu 10.04, everything works good on my pc, but the card reader does not work, so i've been looking for information that solves this problem. So if anyone has the answer or a tip please help me

The fingerprint reader is not working do.
Anybody had succedded?

Ok, so I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that I can't help more. I just installed this package from backports, and then used the table at bottom of this page : http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/audio_intel_hda in order to find which line I should add in my alsa-base config file, depending of the chipset of my sound card.
Then the sound worked good for me.

Hi ” guillaume ” I am thinking about getting a hp dv4 1100 also, tried the live CD in shop and got that stuttered/echo sound problem also. Have you fixed it yet - how? If not does this fix work

Adding this line in the alsa-base file worked for me :
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1.
I also installed a package containing backport kernel modules (I don't remember the exact name right now), but I don't really know if that was necessary, because I added this line in the same time.
Now I'm still having this noisy fan that starts regularly, but I didn't find any way to control the fans on this laptop yet. lm-sensors find no fan on the computer. Actually when the laptop start, I have 10 minutes without any noise, but then when the processor temperature reaches 50°C, the fan starts, and stops at 38°C, and starts again at 50°C, … (even when I doing nothing else than basic work (web, mail, ooo, …) It is a normal behavious, but the fan is really noisy, and it would be great if I could find a tool to control the temperature at which the fan must start.

Did your mic/headphone work fine too? Lastly how bad is the fan ( is there a diff in vista/ubuntu )? my own dv2278ea fan goes on a fair bit - does your fan noise disrupt from watching a video or working?

It's not quite the same laptop, but I think audio and fan will be the same.

Headphones works fine, for the mic I haven't checked yet. The webcam worked without any problem with ubuntu right after installation.
While watching video the fan is not that disrupting, but for me while working it's really a bit noisy. The fan is not that loud, but I really was used to a very silent Dell laptop, so I'm a bit disapointed. Furthermore by default the fan is set as “always running” in the bios, so the first time you start the laptop you hear it well.
For the difference between Vista and Ubuntu, I can't really say, because I used Vista approximately the time to download and burn ubuntu :) But I remember that I heard the fan under Vista as well.

I installed Ubuntu on my new dv4-1100 yesterday, and I have the same problem : Some strange sound comes out from my speakers, but no correct sound.
I'm encoutering another problem with the fan, which is noisy.
Oherwise every other hardware works good.
Yet I'm still looking for a solution to thoses problems, but if I manage to solve them I'll say that the dv4 is a great laptop.
Have you tried the Audio Tester? May like to give it a go.

Umbuntu 8.10 - installed fine
Sound - major issues, unresolved.
I installed kubuntu on my dv 4 and while I was able to connect to the internet, I had problems configuring the sound card. Even after a few fixes, I get a strange noise from my speakers but no sound! Apart from that the 64 bit version of kubuntu has problems with flash…I installed flash but it keeps stopping after a few minutes of playback.
