This is a compatibility guide to running Linux with the HP ProBook 4420s laptop.
This page is just for discussing using Linux on the HP ProBook 4420s. For a general discussion about this laptop you can visit the HP ProBook 4420s page on LapWik.
Tried Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit. Webcam and finger-print not tested. “Clickpad” does not work completely (and is a pain). Everything else works perfectly.
Ubuntu 11.04 alpha 3 fixed a lot of issues on this laptop, especially wireless. I'd recommend it, or waiting for the beta if it's a mission critical computer.

To those who have difficulty in enabling their wireless, specifically for ubuntu 10.10, could try this.
System → Administration → Additional Drivers → STA
Try that method first before trying other solutions such as 'fwcutter' and such. I find the STA method works simpler.
Of course, you'll need to connect the laptop to a wired network for it to happen.
Hope this helps someone.

I tried installing ubuntu 9.10 on hp probook 4420s…but there's no display. I tried running the live version from the DVD, after a while i can hear the starting music, but screen is blank. I tried 'install ubuntu', the cursor blinks for a while, then it goes blank and it just wont show anything! I tried 'check disk for error', but the same thing happens! I've got no clue what's going on. You see, I'm a newbie in this linux thing. I had similar problem with one of my desktops, it was quite old, so i thought it was some compatibility issue, but i don't think that should be happening in this computer. Can anyone suggest me some solution?

I had the same problem with my HP ProBook 4520s I am almost 100% sure that you will be able to install Ubuntu 10.04. The problem is that version 9.10 does not support your graphics by default, hence the no display. I did get 9.10 to eventually show the graphics after I changed a 100 settings, but the screen was jumping as the mouse cursor got near the screen edges. So I downloaded Kubuntu 10.04 and installed it with no problems at all. Hope this helps…after all 10.04 should be the better version ;)

After making settings for two hours I still had graphical problems with Kubuntu 9.10 that was installed on this notebook/probook. Screen resolution will revert back which resets the toolbar and all widgets.
Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx is working perfectly without having to configure a single thing. It took me freakin 5 hours to realize that the upgrade would actually work better which took me a total of less than 1 hour to install and configure according to my needs.
The thing is this, if you buy a brand new laptop, consider upgrading your distro too - which at the end of the day is better!!!
