Edit: Sorry, there is a middle mouse button click recognized if you press on the line between the two button areas. I didn't realize that.
Anyway, i could deactivate the bottom area for mouse movement with the statement above, but if i use the second finger to select text while pressing the left button, the pointer jumps to the upper right corner of the screen. This is very annoying. Seems that the pad still recognizes the first finger on the button area even if it ignores it for the mouse movement.
If someone gets the HP rpm packages working on openSuSE, please leave a note here. Thx.

Can someone help me? I have big problem with me graphic card on this notebook. I just run only in low-graphic mode. Only thing I tried was to install proprietary driver ATI/ADM FGLRX graphic driver.
Operating system is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Thanx.

Actually, ignore my last post. That solution sucks. Might try out compiling this driver here:
Trackpad issue fixed, but it breaks scroll. A good start at least!
sudo su echo options psmouse proto=exps > /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe reboot
That's it! Right click works and now not as jumpy when resting your fingers on the left click.

Installing updates did not work.
I did get the Synaptics stuff from HP working in Ubuntu but am not quite there yet. I am going to open a ticket with HP to see if they have any insight. I know that Suse is supposed to work flawlessly, but there should be an easy way to apply the changes to Ubuntu as well. I know that they do not support Ubuntu, but I am hoping they might have a quick response.
I will update if I find anything worthwhile.

Has anyone gotten the touchpad working? HP offers a Synaptics driver on their website in RPM format. I used alien to convert it into an Ubuntu installable package and it installed without error. It provided me a new launcher under “System - Preferences” but the launcher errors out when attempting to open.
I am running ubuntu 10.10. I am installing all the updates now and will reboot to see if that fixes.
I agree, I hate the touchpad with a passion.

I can't get wireless to work. My ProBook has a RaLink RT3090, which works, dmesg output seems fine, but I can't detect any networks. Even if I am right besides the AP nothing will show up, neither with iwlist scan or in NetworkManager.
I think the Antenna or the Device itself is disabled or something like that, maybe power managment related, but sadly I can't figure out how to make it detect any networks.

I figured it out, the Wireless Card was disabled and I had to enable it first with HP Wireless Manager under Windows. Now that I have done that it works without problems so far.

Any idea how to make sound work?.. I have sound only in headphones. Mic doesn't work either.
3. when tabbing mousepointer gets moved even if not wanted
4. mouseevents run like crazy if there is more than one finger near the touchpad.
How can hp design a notebook using such crappy touchpad?
The borders of the touchpad and the buttonborders have got no relief, so you can not find it with fingers without looking at it.

I agree that the Touchpad is horrible, the buttons that act as toucharea make it really unusable. I disabled it completely with sudo synclient touchpadoff=1

it's really horrible. The special driver RPM packages provided by HP for SuSE don't work with openSuSE 11.3.
But you can disable the bottom area with
xinput –set-prop –type=int –format=32 “SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad” “Synaptics Area” 0 10000 0 3500
see http://www.x.org/archive/X11R7.5/doc/man/man4/synaptics.4.html#sect4

There are many problem with this strange touch:
1. right click not possible
2. button area acts as a toucharea
3. when tabbing mousepointer gets moved even if not wanted
4. mouseevents run like crazy if there is more than one finger near the touchpad.
