The Ethernet card works, but there are some issues. First of all it may cause the installer of some distributions to crash, but blacklisting the module before the installer tries to load it helps, it works after installation. Moreover sometimes the driver doesn’t manage to bring the device up.
The wireless controller works only with the madwifi-hal 0.10.x module, which you have to get from the madwifi.org svn.. The driver is still under development and so it can happen from time to time, that the device is put in a unstable state by the driver, which requires the removal of every power supply for about a minute.
It is detected, but doesn’t work. Tested on Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 and it works.
All in all you can say that Linux works quite well on this laptop, but you will have to fix some issues, which require some experience.

Hi all,
I've a CQ60-415SL and installed Fedora 12 with KDE GUI. I can log in but then what I get is just an empty desktop (not even a taskbar) with the mouse pointer on it (I can move the pointer but the buttons have no effect).
Has anybody managed to install any Linux distro on this version of CQ60?

Have you made sure you had the latest nVidia driver installed? You may need to do so from a terminal window instead of from the gui desktop.
Does Fedora 12 have an option to boot a livecd and test out the distribution without installing? Try booting in low graphics mode and then download the updated driver to a directory that is easy to get to from the terminal window and then boot back into the terminal from the hard drive to install.
Thanks! Now I've got at least a working desktop. It's time to fix all the rest (wifi & pin-light, video card, touchpad block, etc..)
Installed Linux Mint 7 on Compaq Presario CQ60 and everything works fine without any problems at all. I haven't tried the webcam yet and I suspect that will pose a problem, but Mint 7 is quite compatible with the laptop and runs very smoothly.

What drivers issues are you experiencing? The only thing I had to update really with drivers were the nVidia drivers with my installation of ubuntu.
The wifi was corrected with madwifi installation although I have heard some that have not had to do so with later releases freshly installed.

A couple of days ago, I installed (K)ubuntu 9.04.
I've never tried previous versions and I'm quite new to the Open Source matter.
This frustrates me a bit, because this limits my natural urge to troubleshoot.
Everything works just fine, pretty much out of the box even, except for the webcam.
Can anybody with Ubuntu 8.10 what driver is being used for it? As said, I'm new to this matter, but installing the 8.10 driver in 9.04 would seem a logical thing to try?

Have you tried to search the ubuntu forums for a solution? I have the cq60 but no webcam on my model. I believe if you searched the ubuntu forums for webcam help that you might find a solution.

Yes. I installed “cheese” from the beginning and the web-cam worked fine.
I would actually recommend installing karmic release candidate. I have a much better performance since I upgraded to the development cycle (9.10).

I did the linux install today. Laptop came with Vista Home Premium, so I first shrank the Windows partition using the built in utility in Vista (no need to buy partition utilities anymore!).
I installed Fedora 10. Installation went flawless. The only problem I had was with the Nvidia Graphics. I downloaded the driver rpm's from http://rpmfusion.org/. Worked well.
The wireless was properly recognized by Fedora, so I did not have to install any drivers or fumble around with it.
This was by far the easiest linux installed of all the laptops I've owned.
Wireless was a 2 day hack with lots of dead ends and reversals.
final configuration: ath5k running the Ubuntu alpha 9 release
The default install seemingly adds ndiswrapper and has to be defanged as it quietly kills the network GUI. a “sudo modprobe ath5k” loads the ath5k driver after the other possible drivers are blacklisted or physically trashed and all is good.
The driver apparently does not auto detect channels of the base station, so you must query the station and force a channel configuration (?) I am uncertain of this aspect, but the iwconfig reported wlan0 stuck on Channel 1 frequency in auto mode and the WEP key would fail, forcing the channels to match allowed the key to negotiate.
My machine is a 216dx, and actually it needs both dev.wifi0.ledpin = 3 and dev.wifi0.softled = 1. Seems to work well with the madwifi-hal-testing ath_pci driver. I built svn version 3952 for Debian Sid (2.6.28-7) and that works as well. It's no the sames as Windows, it actually works more like an activity led. I tried at look at the trackpad button, but I don't see any event generated when I run xev. My guess is that button is attached to a gpio somewhere, but I have no idea where.
I just tried setting the LED as you have said but I think something I may have not done correctly. I just added those two lines without the # to the end of the file. Still same orange color and not behaving any differently. I have a 215dx should be same commands?
I can not get my wifi led to behave either. It does disable the wifi, but the light itself is always red. A more frustrating problem that I am having is that my “disable trackpad” button does not work. Have any of you gotten it to work?
Setting dev.wifi0.ledpin = 3 in /etc/sysctl.conf fixes the wifi LED on my CQ60
Have the same CQ60 but it is a 215dx and the command you added to /etc/sysctl.conf did not turn on the wifi for me. Actually lost wifi by adding that command. Removed it. Is there a mapping of the LED commands or controls? Would like to get the LED working as it does in windblows…
I just noticed below there is a bug with the ATH5K drivers which is what I am using. Bummers.. Will have to wait I guess…
I have the Pentuim DualCore model with the Intel graphics chip.
I installed Debian Lenny with the rc2 installer, but out of the chute the ath5k driver did not work. I built the madwifi-hal-testing drivers (svn rev 3940), which work fine. Still can't get the wifi LED to work, though.
Lenny installed the VESA video driver, but dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did not allow me to change any screen parameters. X -configure worked and created an xorg.conf that uses the Intel driver.
I also installed KDE (3.5.10) and LXDE from the standard repositories and they work fine at 1366×768 with the Intel video driver.
Well I guess the differences in your expereience comes frome the use of a different distribution than me, I use Debian Lenny.
Of course, that is why i made an extra page. I have one problem, that my wifi is turned off at start, and that the led stays red. Do you have this problem?
Yes, my wifi is also turned off at start, but I guess it should be configurable that it turned on during boot. But nevertheless even if I turn wifi on manually the led stays red, allthough the wifi button seems to work, try scanning before and after pressing it, there will be different results (i.e. one time there won’t be any results at all, because it’s turned off, and one time there will be results).
I managed to make it work, but with the ath_pci driver instead of the ath5k. You have to add this to /etc/sysctl.conf. After updating the ath_pci driver from madwifi snapshots.
dev.wifi0.softled = 1
dev.wifi0.ledpin = 1
There is already a bug reported for the ath5k and i think the next kernel will support it better.
