This is a guide to running Linux with the HP-Compaq Presario V3000z laptop. Linux support for the Presario V3000z is unfortunately weak because of the Broadcom controller used.
This guide is intended to provide you details on how well this laptop works with Linux and which modules you need to configure. For details on how to actually install and configure the required modules have a look at our guides section for distribution specific instructions.

For the Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card in the V3000z to function, you will need to use the either 1)the Windows driver with the ndiswrapper module, 2)the Broadcom wl driver, 3)the open source b43 driver with the Broadcom firmware, or 4)the open source b43 driver with the open source firmware from openfwwf http://www.ing.unibs.it/openfwwf/. You can find a guide on how to configure the ndiswrapper solution here. The windows driver which is used with the ndiswrapper module can be found here. The Broadcom firmware can be optionally downloaded with the installation of the b43_fwcutter package (over a wired internet connection).
Proprietary Nvidia video drivers are available, but are necessary only for high graphics demands like some games require.
The HP-Compaq Presario V3000z works well with current Linux distributions like Fedora Core 11 and Ubuntu 9.04 because the issues with the Broadcom wireless controller have been successfully addressed.
