This is a guide to running Linux with the Lenovo 3000 G400 laptop, model 20008. It is based on my experiences with a clean install of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex AMD64.

System upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope
Default install smooth, ethernet works, so I can continue with updates which made WiFi works on later kernel version.

I got the same problem, looking for solutions too.
My am using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and facing the same problem as this too.
By typing “xrandr –output LVDS –set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native”, it works on Ubuntu 9.04.
But in Ubuntu 9.10, after I type the command, it comes out with this errors:
X Error of failed request: BadRROutput (invalid Output parameter)

Edit /etc/default/grub.
Add 'nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor' to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line.
Lastly, run update-grub as root after saving the file.
Thank you very much for this. I have two questions if you may, please:
1) How were you able to install Ubuntu on your Lenovo G430 3000? I have exactly the same laptop and everytime I try to install ubuntu (which was my first distro of choice) the X is screwed up.
2) “xrandr –output LVDS –set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native” How may I tanslate this into Fedora 10 language please? I am using Fedora now and it has been quite a while that I was in search of how to control brightness. Thank you for giving this hope!

A quick update
xrandr –output LVDS –set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native
does work but be careful with the brightness level , when I decreased the brightness to 0 value the screen went black, but when i tried to restore the brightness level the screen state did not change.
Problem got resolved by one of the fundamental OS troubleshooting hacks …. system reboot :)
xrandr –output LVDS –set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native
copy paste the abpve string as it is (screen will go blank for sec )and then the brightness control keys start working fine.
BTW ,i am on Lenovo 3000 G430 4152 27Q | Ubuntu 8.10- the Intrepid Ibex

After searching and trying for more than 10 ways, I finally able adjust screen brightness now. Just execute the following command before pressing Fn+Up (or Fn+Down) key:
sudo xrandr –output LVDS –set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native

I hope I can extend my battery life ~50% with sufficiently low brightness setting
1. The display brightness control does not work (as indicated in the table above). After function key press, the on-screen display (OSD) shows correctly, but nothing happen. The display brightness remains at the maximum.
2. The touch pad does not work.
FYI
When I was trying to install a couple of time without success, I figured out that it caused by “re-writable CD”. So, I burned the installation disk again using regular CD (not a rewritable one) at the lowest speed - 10X. After that, I can installed the ubuntu 9.04 sucessfully. It took about 30 mins to complete installation process.

My laptop's touch pad does not support linux mandriva
I can't seem to install Linux on my laptop. I have a Lenovo 3000 G430, Intel Dual Core T4300 2.0GHz, RAM 1.5GB, HDD 160GB, Graphics Intel 4500.
The problem is, after installation when the system goes into the OS the display goes crazy. All kinds of weird patterns show up as if the OS read the graphic adapter wrong. But during installation the graphics were fine.
I do not know what distro you are using. Assuming you are using Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise, try this from the shell as root (denoted by the # symbol):
# system-config-display
