Loaded Kubuntu 9.10 over the network, everything pretty much worked out of the box. Upgraded KDE to 4.4 release. CPU frequency clocks CPUs down to 800MHz when on battery. Volume buttons, bios keys (backlight control) all seem to work without any modification. Overall very pleased with out of box experience using kubuntu 9.10.
I am now having problems with the latest ubuntu. On ubuntu 11.04 X doesn't work unless you boot and old kernel, and wifi doesn't work. This is from an upgrade, an installation might be different.
I then tried to install ubuntu 10.10 over it, as wifi worked before on 10.10. However, when installing new, the wifi doesn't work out of the box for 10.10, even though it worked for me when I upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04.
I would now recommend installing 10.04 LTS, upgrading to 10.10, and forgetting about 11.04. This should work perfectly.

Works fine for me on Ubuntu 10.04 with no issues whatsoever. I haven't managed to test the battery yet, so that might still be a problem, but overall I'm very impressed.

Can agree with the aforementioned. Installed 10.04 from CD. Everything basically works out of the box. No major problems with drivers etc. However, hotkeys and shortcuts for turning things off and on (wireless, bluetooth, ext vga etc) or switchings things off (lcd/external) doesn't seem too work.
Also resumining from disk lets the display freeze totally, so standby is not really usable

I just ordered a U450p, the top of the line model, the 33892GU.
Specs: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo SU7300 Processor (1.30GHz) 4GB DDR3 320GB Hard Drive (5400rpm) ATI Mobile Radeon HD4200 512MB
What is the boot time like for yours?

On Ubuntu 10.04 most things work pretty much out of the box. Had a few issues with enabling the proprietary drivers from ATI and also Bluetooth had some enabling issues, but it might be something to do with the fact that I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10. Currently I have everything working perfectly. u450p is a great laptop - I'm very happy with it. The only downside I know of at the moment is the fact that the Ubuntu is more harsh on the battery than Windows 7 is.

On Ubuntu 10.10 things work much better. I have even fewer problems. Battery life is probably even better than Windows 7, but I think there is a slight problem with suspend (s2ram) if you use the proprietary Ati drivers, resume from suspend is sometimes very slow.
