Does not work out-of-the-box, not even after a day's worth of driver recompilation etc. This stopped me in my testing.

Possible solutions are described in http://blog.zorinholdings.com/post/501557101/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-wifi-with-ubuntu-10-04 but I could not make it play.
The Realtek 8176 can be recognized in the output of “lspci” as:
03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8176 (Rev 01)
It seems to be rather new in the Thinkpad; at least it is not listed in http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Wireless_Network_Adapters#Realtek
There seems to be variants of this machine with regard to Wifi hardware. A variant with Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 instead of Realtek 8176 is described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9992727&postcount=94
Discussion
The laptop seems to work at first sight. But if you look closer you will notice small but annoying difference between display sharpness on win7 and ubuntu (10.4, 11.04, 11.10). Display is flickering on ubuntu, especially on dark background with backlight at 40-80% (i checked on Knopix 6.7.3, Fedora 15 too). On Win7 you can sees pecific grid on screen, on linux distros.. it looks like old 50hz CRT monitor
