This is a guide to running Linux with the MSI X-Slim X410 laptop. If you have the MSI X-Slim X410 and are wanting to run Linux on it you've came to the right place!.
This page is just for discussing using Linux on the MSI X-Slim X410. For a general discussion about this laptop you can visit the MSI X-Slim X410 page on LapWik.
When first installing Ubuntu the drivers get pretty much covered by the driver installation process that begins when first start up the only thing I needed to really do is get the wireless driver working manually. To get the wireless working With the MSI X410 you need to know what wireless card it has you can find it out by typing this in to terminal.
so for my example mines is RT3090! so I copied that and went to
Menu > System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager
and typed in the quick search “RT3090” and bam top one driver for my MSI X410 install that and done and another thing I done to make it run smoother is install Wicd network manager to install this go to Menu > Ubuntu software centre and in the top right type in the search “Wicd” and at the time of publishing it was the second on the list! install that
and then go to
system > preferences > start-up applications
and un-select network manager and close and save if prompted now you will be able to search for wireless networks and join! YAY! but now that your not using the default network manager fire fox will start up in “work offline mode” every time you start fire fox to change that open up terminal and type gksudo nautilus and search for Firefox prefs mines is under
File system > ETC > Firefox (one inside ETC. directory just press f and it will go straight to fire fox) > Pref
and the JS file named Firefox.js open with gedit or just double click it Where it says
Enable the NetworkManager integration pref(“toolkit.networkmanager.disable”, false);
Change it to
Enable the NetworkManager integration pref(“toolkit.networkmanager.disable”, true); and bingo done now just restart boot in to Linux and DONE!
all in all I don't really notice a difference performance wise between pre-installed windows and Ubuntu and this a lot easier that hackintosh runs smoother than windows and there is more Linux people willing to help with problems and your part of something when using Linux! i just install ubuntu 11.10 on this laptop: so far so good every thing its working. It's not that big a diference with seven so far and unity its.. well… don't now. I think i'll try ubuntu 10.04 to see a better performance ¿are there any issues unsolved?
Thanks

Were you able to install Maverick?? I cannot! Even with Live USB or upgrading from 10.04 or installing it since the botting the screen is flickering heavily… Anyway with 10.04 and any other Linux ditro i can't wathc videos properly starting from 480p, like having very low frame rate :(
and followed step 2 - created boot USB. Once you plug your USB stick into X410, you have to go to BIOS and set USB as a primary device for booting. Then you will be able to load the Ubuntu from your USB and do the installation. Note that I have done a clean install - deleted Windows.
I had certain issues with 10.04 (no wifi etc), therefore I have waited few weeks for 10.10 and it's working perfectly.
Hope this helped.

Hi,
the problem is not how to install it but the laptop I believe.
Check this thread I just opened on to Ubuntu Forum
Thanks a lot for your input! I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my X410, however it seems that the sound output via HDMI is not working. :( Video is working fine, but sound is only working if I keep it on the laptop speakers. Have you tried to plug the laptop to TV? I am newbie in Linux and I would appreciate any help in solving this issue.
Thanks

I'm desperate!!
I have simply downloaded the latest Ubuntu here:
