This is a guide to running Linux with the Toshiba Satellite L30 laptop. The L30 is a very low end laptop with some very cheap components. Not even a wireless network card is included.
This guide is intended to provide you details on how well this laptop works with Linux and which modules you need to configure. For details on how to actually install and configure the required modules have a look at our guides section for distribution specific instructions.
The ATI Radeon Xpress 200M included in the L30 can work with either the open source radeon module or ATI's proprietary fglrx module. However the 200M has minimal 3D support so there isn't much point in installing the fglrx module.
The sound system in the L30 does not work without patching the ALSA code so it will require some compiling work for it to being functioning. More information on this issue can be found on here.

For L30-115 I have I tried 'options snd-hda-intel model=asus-laptop' and works both speakers and headphones. I tested this option at: Ubuntu 8.04Lts, 9.10 - works Ubuntu 8.10, 9.04 - works but the sound is unstable
Opensuse 11.2 - works Mandriva - works

- Under Ubuntu 8.10 and later sound works fine, no manual configuration needed; in earlier distributions - headphones only; - Suspend/Resume doesn't work;
Also, using kernels 2.6.31 system usually hangs when plugging/unplugging AC adapter. Turning ACPI support off helps. In earlier kernels there is no such isuue.

I'm using mostly slax [6.x], and the only problem is the modem (the modem link above doesn't work publickliy) Sound only (still..) works on the headphones, so it's either them or external speakers. The same with other live linux, ie. backtrack, ubuntu, etc.. - some distros mixing up their sound servers (alsa & oss) need some work here, ie configure everything for [out-of-the-box] alsa, and it's ok for the headphones. The alsa updating is supposed to also fix the modem thing.. as the modem is “hidden” fron the system on the exact same bus with the HDA sound card, but I haven't tried it yet.
I've never tried the card thing, as all of you also seem not to..
my 2 cents

I've tried Ubuntu 8 with this laptop after I upgraded the memory and the hard disk. Everything worked fine except for the sound. Then I tried Mandriva Linux 2008.1 everything worked fine including the sound so if your going to use Linux use Mandriva because you dont have to play with settings.

Sound working ubuntu Hardy Heron
Have tried many distros on this laptop and sound has been my only problem.I have however been able to get it working on suse 10.2 but no sound from headphones.Ihave just installed ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and sound was the only problem.I did what I found to work in suse and that was to add” options snd-hda-intel model=uniwill-31 ” to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.Headphones still don't work.For some unknown reason alsamixer is not available.I have installed the same ubuntu on my desktop and alsamixer is installed. Have only been hanging on to windows xp for genealogy program family tree maker but now with ubuntu and gramps it's farewell windows.
