ACPI does not work properly with kernels older than 2.6.36 so you will have problems with wireless and other aspects.
Sound can cause some problems. I.e., there has been reported, that sound did not played on external device even if it is plugged in, or it did played on both external device and internal speakers. In that case, you should load sound driver with specified option. On my machine I did add
options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad
into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. On some other machines there are other options which works. You should use command
lspci -vv |grep -i audio
to get information about your sound hardware and just search the web for it's name +linux. With trial and error, you should eventually get sound working perfectly.
You can safely install Ubuntu 10.10 or newer or Debian Squeeze (6.0) or newer. Namely, anything released since 2011 should run just fine. You should not have any problems, especially if you did read comments below.

Hey guys i kinda need help with this. i am booting ubuntu from a usb drive and its on c650 (the i3 version) but it skips the boot and goes straight to loading windows. when i take out the hard-drive, it sticks on the screen that writes SYSLINUX version…..

3.0.3+ resolves all video bios troubles that occured for me with 2.6.38,39. I had by instance at those times, minor problems during boot, by sizing well the FrameBuffer screen. Sometimes, in an average though of 30% boot sequence, X.org video frame opening at wrong size, without possibity to switch mode, while in normal times beeing able..
All of this is now over and I feel very confortable with the current kernels stability and speed (5s to shutdown), 20s to boot a patched Gentoo on a SATA drive. 9.5Mb of kernel.
So am I Really happy currently, about the latest kernels version stability.

hello guys l have problem on my toshiba c 650 in sound .it work just on in not out l cant use mic.but it work normaly in win7 but not work in ubuntu 10.10……….what l can do please.help me.

I'm always telling friends that I use ubuntu since 2005 with great stable pleasure… so my friend was ready to try it.. well he has this toshiba C650.. No boot on USB bootkey…ouch that hurts. some googling and tried 10.10… That boots and runs with wifi ootb.. well from the bootup key..
Choose for graphical install, automatic partitioning and during install already saw that kernel 2.6.35 was being downloaded. Luckily after install and rebooting win7 was still starting fine… just to stay friends with him. Ubuntu was also starting, but no wifi. Alex's post gave solution to this problem by editing grub.
Now the only problem we still have is internal mic not working. I have searched a bit, but no simple clearly understandable solution found yet. Of course lack of my competence, but I'm not a programmer and my friend is philosophy teacher… We just like to use a stable platform without virusses, or I at least never experienced one on Ubuntu.

Hello, since I found this page, refering to a modest draft on my host, I wanted to share the news read by watching at kernel list: Some kernel developers have recently done great work, for about 3 weeks, to bring a working ACPI stack on Toshiba laptop's series. So if you're still in trouble with your C650: Use a 2.6.36-rc7 and above.

I have Toshiba Satellite C650 (not pro).
Just few minutes ago I have discovered that kernels 2.6.35 have patch for Toshiba ACPI.

This patch is applied to all kernels from 2.6.35 on (i.e. Ubuntu 10.10) and has been backported to Debian Squeeze (testing right now, but should be stable before end of the year). This means taht if you use distro with that kernel, you don't have to patch anything by yourself.
All you have to do is running kernel with
acpi=copy_dsdt
option. Don't run acpi=off as Ian says!
To run kernel with that parameter, on GRUB screen you have to choose your kernel, press 'e' key and in line starting with 'linux' add 'acpi=copy_dsdt' somewhere (it may be on end of line, but BEFORE '–', if your line has it). Now press control and 'c' key simultaneously to boot a machine.
To make change permanent, in /etc/default/grub make sure you have line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“acpi=copy_dsdt”
(you should have similar — just edit it).
Function keys for volume control, backlight and suspending to RAM should work. Since I discovered that option literally few minutes ago, I haven't tested anything else yet.
I have a Toshiba Satellite C650 (not a pro) with an AMD Sempron processor. I had trouble installing. After some googling, I discovered that there were problems with ACPI support. After disabling ACPI at boot, everything I tried worked fine (I installed Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64). I have not yet tested the webcam.
To disable ACPI you press the shift key while booting (the installation disk). You get a menu. I may have had to hit escape to get a second menu, I don't remember exactly. Select Linux with the arrow keys, then hit F6 and select apci=off.
To avoid following this procedure at each boot, grub2 must be reconfigured. Modify the line in the file /etc/default/grub from:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=””
fo
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“acpi=off”
or
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“acpi=ht”
Then do:
$ sudo update-grub
Ubuntu will work but without ACPI, your computer will run down it's battery faster than it would with ACPI. This bug has been reported and hopefully will get fixed.
try linux mint. its almost like ubuntu in view and usage.but far more efficient for toshiba c650 compared to ubuntu.

I too tried too hard to get ubuntu10.04 on Satellite pro c650 but no luck…
Ethernet started but issues with shutdown and WiFi are still there. BTW my desktop works absolutely fine with ubuntu 10.04
I am going to try fedora 13 or Madriva Linux 2010. lets see if it works.

* Toshiba seems to provide a different ACPI, putting a noapic parameter into grub is the key for USB, wireless & more to work (Trying nolapic leads you into having *only one* core awakened.)
this laptop does not want to load ubuntu lucid. tons of documentation backing this up over the net. those who can get an old version of ubuntu happening cannot get ethernet and many have sound and usb issues.
com,e on canonical toshiba is a major manufacturer of laptops and your distro is not working with them.
now doing the distro-shuffle to find the right one. and giving up on ubuntu until they get it together.
please note my netbook and work laptop [ hp ] and desktop function really well with 'lucid'
just this new laptop does not. and have done the compiling and attempting to trick the distro into accepting ubuntu, too many hours now…abandoning it.
