You can enter any specific notes with running Linux on the Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 here.

Wifi doesn't work in Ubuntu 8.04/8.10/9.04 - The laptop only get signal when it's near the AP. The problex it's fixed, installing the package: linux-backports-modules

2009 01 04 - XP & Linux distros on Toshiba Satellite L300, 2GB dual core processor with 4GB RAM

Ubuntu & Knoppix LiveCDs: Zilch. BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death)

Called Toshiba support (pleasantly surprised by getting to a human voice within 2 branches of the automated menu tree) - was told that the motherboard drivers did not support anything but Windoze Vista.

The Four Stages Of Grief:

Anger
Denial
Bargaining
Acceptance

….or something like it.

** Also note: XP will apparently not work on anything > 3GB RAM. BSOD yet again.

out.

When I start up my computer, it goes straight to a black screen that reads at the top “Missing operating system”. Every time I hit a key it makes this really loud beeping noise. I have tried everything from restarting it to taking out the battery & then putting it back in. It was working fine this morning. . . what should I do?

i've the same problem that ryan, the left's fan doesn't work correctly.:-(

ryan, Wednesday 06 of May, 2009 [00:49:26]

one small, limited ray of hope for the owners of these laptops.. that is that force loading the omnibook module with ecmode=11 will start the fan and alot of the acpi functions (but not all)

BIG FAT WARNING:: there is a weird glitch where the computer powers back on after this is used. ie it will turn itself back on after you turn it off. The reason is currently a mystery.
please see this post on linux questions for more info:

Having significant acpi issues with this laptop. cooling fan does not turn on correctly or turn off for that matter.
acpi -t shows 0.0c for the core temp
the fan eventually turns on at 79-80c which is bloody hot and then stays on until suspend or poweroff in which you must heat the laptop up to this temp again before cooling kicks in.

fn fkeys are sporadic, brightness sometimes works and sometimes not but the fan is a persistent issue.
I have tried all current acpi tools for toshibas inc toshiba_acpi.ko

tested on ubuntu intrepid 8.10 and on ubuntu jaunty 9.04

jaunty currently has more problems than intrepid (no resume from suspend out the box)

been using Ubuntu 8.10 (IBEX) for 6 months now…everything working except for trying different gnome screens, i can only open two. and compiz doesnt work because of display adapter (being inbuilt in motherboard).

volume wheel, mouse, everythign working, just trying to find a way to make dialup internet modem work as i dont have LAN, wireless etc internet here in the desert where i work…its being a pain…

everything else is working perfectly…(sound, display, keyboards etc)

Hi all,
I tried OpenSuse 11.1, it appeared fine, good WiFi, Ethernet, Graphics, but no sound.
So I tried Ubuntu, where all is working, sound also, a bit low, alsamixer partially fixed.
Some freeze during shutdown.

Yorik, Monday 19 of January, 2009 [22:44:36]

Only OpenSUSE 11.1 installed without hard slalom :-) and all hardware was found.
CentOS 5.2 and Gentoo 2008r1 LiveCD fails if net card is enabled.
You can install CentOS 5.2 with disabled ethernet and then find kernel module rpm for RTL8101E/8102E or compile module using sources from RealTek, sure second PC with Internet must have :-)
Bad news: very-very low sound volume on OpenSUSE 11.1, needs to update ALSA or etc., I did not find solution yet. Problem with hibernate on SUSE, laptop goes to hibernate and then just restarts instead of poweroff.

Hi Yorik,

Thanks for the info - do you have the same kind of computer as I do? 64 bit &c?

Cheers,
Michael

Hi. I tried installing Ubuntu using a boot CD on my Staellite L300, but the screen fails when I start the installation or when I try just running Ubuntu from the CD. I just can see the initial menu of Ubuntu CD Installing. Is there any problme with VGA card compatiobility?. Thanks.

Ramsey, Sunday 08 of March, 2009 [16:23:14]

I'm having the same problem. I'm getting a screen failure as soon as it gets past the initial loading screen. Mine is a L310, but I might be getting the same kind of failure as you. I've tried Ubuntu 8.04. I'll let you know if I have any more errors, or I figure out the solution.
