Running Ubuntu Maverick, EVERYTHING works…including the internal microphone, which got fixed with a kernel update before i upgraded from Lucid…..i even have games running on wine that wont run on xp, thanks to an S3 Texture Compression (S3TC) extension for Mesa, and a tool called DRIconf…
The latest Ubuntu works out of the box…even without proprietary drivers….

I have installed linux Mint 9 side by side with Vista on an ACER 5315-2713. On the Vista side, the fan works normally. On the Linux side, no fan at all.

I had the same issue with my Acer from Walmart. This did not happen until I installed PCLOS 2010. I downloaded the latest Bios and flashed.
The fan works without any problems now. Problems I had prior to upgrade
was fan would not start and computer overheated/ shutdown.

I too have a Walmart laptop, Acer Aspire 5315-2582. I had the same problem. Tried Ubuntu 10.04 and Mandriva 2010 Spring: unexpected shutdowns, probably due to overheating on both. Upgrading BIOS to 1.45 (Dec 2008 version) solved the problem, at least on Ubuntu (I didn't go back to test Mandriva). Note that the BIOS flash program refused to run under DOS. I was able to run it with a Windows repair CD: see further details here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9646303#post9646303

I installed Suse 11.2, mostly ok, but I cannot set an external monitor 22” (Medion) with is full power of 1650×1050 dots, it works with no more than about 1000×768. The second and more serios issue is that for some reason the fan of precessor is not turning on and the computer suddenly stops when it gets hot.

I've replaced the wifi card with an Intel 4965 from eBay for a few bucks… and now works like charm, no wifi issues at all.
All distros works out of the box…

The processor replaced also because the original stock Celeron was too hot (no speedstep) and the fan was always on. :-( The new processor is an T6400 it's like a new laptop now. I installed 2GB stick also.

This laptop support T2310 which from eBay 12-13Ł and you will have a _LOT_ cooler laptop and dualcore also.

I have ubuntu 9.10 run ok, except wifi

Ernesto Montemayor, 2009/11/01 20:28

Currently using an Acer 5315-2971 running Ubuntu 9.04, and already tested all 2008 and 2009 Ubuntu distros, save for 9.10.

The mic can't be recognized, there are issues with wireless Atheros card (have to use mad-wifi, and when trying to use a second display there have always been issues.

i've successfully run ubuntu 9.04 on the 5315 non-wc model with the 80GB HDD and 2GB RAM, i'm not sure if the microphone works or not as i have never tried it however everything else works flawlessly after installation

Marcio Varizo, 2009/03/04 16:45

Already run Ubuntu (K, X and G flavors) 2008 editions, all of them unable to run wireless Atheros 5007EG. Currently runs OpenSuse11.1 and Fedora 10, both wireless works ok.
No distro (tested around 10 distros, all of them based on Fedora, Debian, Red Hat and Ubuntu) was able to run microphone.
Laptop Acer Aspire 5315-2914 (120 Gb HD, 2 Gb RAM).

Hector Anocibar, 2009/02/13 23:17

With Mandriva 2009 everything runs well including wireless, but I can't use the microphone.
Laptop Acer Aspire 5315-2370 (2G of RAM).
