For the test was used Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Karmic) 64 edition - without any “adjustment” - even with the “live” edition.
It worked out of the box - really good & inexpensive Linux laptop!
Noisy fan, though.
With Mandriva 2009.1 ethernet works only with ACPI disabled.
With Mandriva 2010.0 I obtained only a black screen 5 second after boot. The same in safe mode.
To make backlight adjustment work in Ubuntu Karmic with Kernel Mode Setting, follow this guide:

Hello,
I own an Acer Extensa 5635Z. Its Dual core 2.0 Ghz processor. Just to let others know i am successfully running a core 2 Duo T9300 2.5Ghz now. I upgraded the laptop processor and all is ok.
Well for linux i know it will work great specially on Mandriva.
i have a big problem with my acer that when instaling ubuntu it shown only a black screen then nothing.. pleaaaaaaaaase help me if someone have succeded to instal any version of linux on the acer extensa 5635z..
Debian lenny non riconosce scheda di rete durante installazione da cd
BIG problem here: no speedstep working, noisy fan starting once a minute.
Tested with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, 9.04 & 9.10, Live-CD and regular install.
Any suggestions? Are you all SURE, that speedstep was working on your machines? I consider returning my machine to the dealer…
Backlight control via Fn-LEFT/RIGHT does not work for me.
Rest seems ok so far.
For Backlight
run in a terminal : sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line edit in
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet splash i915.modeset=0 acpi_backlight=vendor”
save and close
in a terminal give: sudo update-grub
wait and rebootBold Text
@xbix87
no, the options have no effect (opensuse 11.2, 2.6.33rc6)
Acer Extenza 5635Z 433G25Mi
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.
I had applied GRUB changes described above and after reboot Fn-Left/Right does change Backlight.
But I have another problem:
I have installed Ubuntu Lynx from Wubi into file. After opening notebook while sleeping - it didn't wake up (though it waked up normally hundred times before). After plugging out and in battery, it restarted but Wi-Fi has died!
Bluetooth is always on after restart (can be switched off by the Bluetooth button), Wi-Fi is off (and doesn't respond when I press WiFi button).
It says network is down. Reinstalling drivers and installing linux-backports-wireless-lucid didn't help.
I didn't manage to fix it and had to use Ethernet connection instead.
Did anyone had same problem with Wifi on Ubuntu Lynx?
Hi Ivan,
right-click on the network symbol on the top right menu bar, there you can activate the network (again).
Suspend/hibernate is not supported when running under wubi, afaik.
On my Extensa 5635z even under a regular installation (w/o wubi) the suspend mode doesn't work. It hangs on wake-up (till now, I still hope to find a solution for that) …
