The ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 is supported by most current Linux distributions for 2D modes. If you want to take advantage of its 3D capabilities you will need to install the proprietary fglrx module. See the guides section here for details on how to do this.
The wireless controller uses the Madwifi module. Many Linux distributions include this as standard however see our guides section for details about other distributions.
Unlike most AMD based laptops this one uses the Atheros wireless controller rather than a Broadcom based one, this make wireless support on Linux much better. If you select a Linux distribution which includes the Madwifi module as standard you will have no problem with the Acer Ferrari 5000.
Discussion
i try ubuntu 11.04 ,11.10,10.14 and now 10.10 and still not working mic. and camera i,m not starter, but here i don,t now what to do. I like linux and don,t wana again go in windows…
If anyone can halp - please explain that simply…
Running Gentoo:
jerinkturion jserink # uname -a
Linux jerinkturion 2.6.30-gentoo-r5 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Sep 20 20:33:56 SGT 2009 x86_64 AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
PCMCIA works fine.
mad w-f- no longer works for new kernels, use in the inkernal module for the Atheros wifi chipset.
I am using the X.org drivers for the laptop and have full 3D accell on the laptop display and an external 22” display as well. The great thing about the Xorg drivers is they don;'t breaker when I update Gentoo like the ATI drivers do. You might find also that the X1600 is no longer supported by the ATI drivers. Everything works except google earth which crashes X after it closes.
The orbicom works with some tweaking of the in kernel module. Sound works perfectly.
Firewire works with disks, haven't really tested the card reader.
I'm running with 4G of ram, it rocks!
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
John
