To use ACPI you will have to update the laptop's BIOS the latest (1.17).
Acer TravelMate 5520 has been tested with Ubuntu 8.10, it appears to be fully functional aslong as you if you first update the BIOS to 1.17 for the ACPI.

using Ubuntu 8.10 everything ok up and running for 1 week
