Ok here's my update on the Eee 904HA. It runs better on Linux than on Windows 7 - faster on Linux. It installs and runs Windows 7 and providing it has the latest asus bios (2204, these bios enable it to work with Windows 7 without driver issues. However, it's best to update the bios AFTER Windows 7 is installed (installing them while XP was installed caused a fault with my old 904HA), which means, installing Windows 7, then the Asus XP ACPI driver (found on their support site under ATK), then installing 'Asus Update' program (NOT Asus 'Live' Update), then pasting the new bios file on the desktop after extracting it (you'll need to download it to usb stick from another computer),then using Asus Update program to instal the new bios (select instal from file and select the file on the desktop). This works very well. Select F2 after switching the computer back on after bios update, and all is done. You will then get warnings about an ACPI driver missing - it isn't missing, but you need to uninstall the Asus XP ACPI driver at this point, and also the Asus Update program as it's no longer needed. Windows 7 already provides a compatible ACPI driver. After the bios update Windows 7 provides all the drivers, including the ACPI driver and everything works perfectly except the shortcut keys on the front for which there aren't any Windows 7 drivers, but these aren't necessary. But the Windows updates were a pig to install, took about 2 days and kept crashing - this turned out to be one particular update that was causing the problem, which is a known one for being difficult to download and install (presumably only on older hardware). Updates are fine until the .NET framework 4 one shows up - after that it is best to do them 2 or 3 at a time to weed out any that won't install without having to start from scratch with installation again. The problem one is near the end of a batch of about 198 updates. There are two problem ones, but one installs on its own second time around and one won't install. It doesn't seem like an important one and if it's really needed there will be a manual update option from Microsoft site, but from what I've read it's not needed on 32 bit computers anyway. But in the end I'm going to put Linux on it - just not sure which one. Xubuntu and Bodhi run best on Eee PC's I find. Out of these two I prefer Xubuntu for simplicity, but the old long term support which works well (12.04) is due to expire soon and the new one (14.04) has errors on 915 chips that don't seem to be sorted after almost a year. So I reckon Bodhi Linux is best - fast and light but not quite so user-friendly.

I'm a bit sad that all the newer versions of Linux don't seem compatible with older hardware like Eee PC's (Ubuntu,Xubuntu, Linux Mint latest reincarnations just are too sophisticated). The error with 14.04 Xubuntu comes up on boot up each time (stolen memory).

Ok. I have updated it to the last but one bios and it is fine, and after some searching I find it is the last bios update that causes issues with the ACPI driver and is related to being able to run Windows 7 and installing an SSD (I think). So I'm sticking with the second to last bios - but I do want to upgrade it to Windows 7, so does anyone know if there was an ACPI driver released that worked? I think I read somewhere that the Microsoft one worked best. Don't want to mess it up!

Easypeasy no longer supported by the way, but Xubuntu 12.04 long term support runs very well. I have just acquired an excellent 904HA which has only been used a couple of times. I'm wanting to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and wondering if there is a need to upgrade the bios first (as you have to with the smaller netbooks). If so, does anyone have any experience of the bios versions on this model please? The last time I upgraded one of these to the latest bios it developed a major fault in that it wouldn't turn off and just kept turning itself on again - now whether that particular one had a virus or something I don't know, but am reluctant to upgrade to the last bios and wondered if anyone has a) upgraded bios on this model (and to which bios version) and b) upgraded it to an ssd without upgrading bios as well. Thanks
