Notes

The webcam works with the linux-uvc drver. However this driver is still beta and may not work properly with every configuration. You will need to install this driver manually as I don't believe any distribution includes this.

For some of the hardware in the Asus F3E you will need kernel version 2.6.22 or higher. Ubuntu 7.10 and Fedora 8 are good candidates for this laptop.

Summary

As long as you use a Linux distribution with at least kernel 2.6.22 you shouldn't have many problems with the F3E.

Slow boot up on Hardy Heron

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron 32 bit on F3E. Upon system startup it slows down in the progress bar.

What is this “device not accepting… means”? Is that the reason for slow startup?

Thanks

Low LCD brightness & “whistling”

I bought ASUS F3E few days ago (here http://www.alza.cz/asus-f3e-ap367-d97902.htm). Installation was troublefree (Ubuntu 8.04 HH), but there was (and is) a problem with brigthness of my LCD. Is very low everytime the system starts. But there is more serious problem. In this article is said, that the graphics card is fully supported, but it seems to me like a little “lie” ;) My graphics card is “whistling” all the time and the problem with brightness should be (IMHO) caused by the graphics card. Drivers are up-to-date. Does anyone know what the problem is?

There is a question for ABcsix, if he does not have the same problem, 'cause I have the same HW like him.

Try the following:

sudo echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch

If that works you can add that line (without the sudo at the start) into /etc/rc.local and leave a comment here if it works so I can add it to the wiki. I believe this issue was caused by a update to the acpi_asus module.

Sorry, don't know about the “whistling”.

Try to add acpi=off as kernel parameter and “whistling” disappears.

But this will turn off all power management on the laptop. It's not recommended.
