With Ubuntu 9.10, you will need to install the backports package (sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic) for reliable wireless.
The Asus K50IJ works ok with Linux, but there are still a few hardware issues.
Discussion
All problems of Asus k50ij are solved if you use kernel 2.6.35 or newer.

I have one, the webcam is inverted no matter what, it is a hardware issue. Under Windows the fix is to install ManyCam and use it to flip.
Under linux, the webcam is not compatible for whatever reason with the Flash player.
The sound doesn't work in Ubuntu 10.10
i have installed ubuntu 10.04 …….i m not able to adjust the brightness of the screen…..anyone help please????????????????????????
Everything works well with Sabayon on mine.
is there any way to solve the problem with the webcam???
please help. Can we use any additional software to make it correct.please help me brothers
Yes!
The short version is, you need to install the latest version of libv4l. This can be downloaded here:
http://people.fedoraproject.org/~jwrdegoede/libv4l-0.6.5-test.tar.gz
Installation instruction can be found here:
http://hansdegoede.livejournal.com/7622.html
If it still doesn't work, then follow these instructions:
http://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/linux-uvc-devel/2009-June/004886.html
Had to install linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic for reliable wireless with Karmic.
Elantech touchpad is overly sensitive, and tools to adjust it don't work.
As travis mentioned, webcam produces image rotated 180 degrees (upside down).
Everything else works well for me.
This is a followup to my earlier post.
I'm still using Karmic. Although wireless performance improved with the backports wireless package, it still drops the connection frequently.
I installed wicd to handle wifi. It doesn't have the drop-connection-every-2-minutes problem.
Everything works well with Ubuntu 9.1 Karmic except for an upside down camera.
Lots of sound and cam problems. SXC
