Notes

Graphics

The NVIDIA Geforce 9500M needs the latest version of the nvidia drivers to function. Most Linux distributions don't include this so manual installation in necessary. Check out the guides section on this site for installation details.

On some Linux distributions you may need to disable the light sensor to fix a dark screen issue:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch

On some other distributions you may instead have to change the sensor light level (light levels go from 0 to 15):

echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch
echo 7 > /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/ls_level

You can add this line(s) to your /etc/rc.local file to permanently fix the issue.

Audio

For full audio support you will need to use ALSA version 1.0.16 or grater. Like the graphics controller, most Linux distributions only have an older version so you will need to install it manually. Again, check the guides section on this site for installation details.

Camera

The webcam works with the Linux-uvc driver. Some (Ubuntu 7.10) Linux distributions include this driver while other don't. Check our guides section for installation details.

Summary

There is some configuration work required for the Asus M50SV to function properly with Linux however nothing exceptionally difficult is necessary. This laptop work just fine after the properly installation work is done.

ASUS M50SV Does Not Work With Sabayon 3.5

Just letting everyone know that the wireless network card does not work on Sabayon 3.5.
I have tried all the suggestions at the sabayonlinux.org forum and none of them work.
You can still surf via hardwire network, but whats the point? You might as well wait until they get it right.

Screen Brightness

To fix dark screen disable the ambient light sensor like so:

sudo -s
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch

that command doesnt work in fedora…

[root@localhost ~]# echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch
bash: /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch: No such file or directory

beautiful laptop!

get compat-wireless latest for the iwl4965 driver
get libfprint/pam_fprint for the fingerprint reader - works great!
